Downs Chicago was at chapel exercises on Tuesday and made a splendid talk to the student body. He referred very complimentary to Mr. Roby C. Robbins, a former student of Prof. B. R. Dougerty, and now dean of Au rora College, Illinois. Professors B. B. Douerhertv. Rov -M. Brown, I. G. Greer and W. W. btedman attended a meeting of the University students at Blowing Rock on Friday evening, the 12th. iProf. Brown made a brief talk in Chapel on Saturday reporting the Alumni meeting of the University students on the evening before in which he said that a committee was appointed to try to induce some one of the University faculty to write history of North Carolina. Miss Esther Staribury on Saturday reported a large number of the mu sic students who had made a perfect record in lessons and practice du ring the past two months. Miss Stanbury is the capable director of music at the training school. IProf. Stedman will take the prize on celery this year. He had a stalk on exhibit in the school last week that would measure more than two feet high. The past Saturday and Sunday were visiting days for the students of the school. Quite a number took advantage of the privilage and vis ited home folks or the1. homes . of their former student friends. Two hours of social enjoyment at the girls' dormitory on Monday afternoon was a very pleasant affair for the students. Work on the new boys' dormitory has been moving on for several weeks. Wfrieti completed it will be a splendid building, well construct ed and admirably located. A very interesting children's exer cise was given at the Baptist church on Sunday evening in the interest of State missions. Quite a liberal free will offering was contributed. T(he names of the 'soldier boys from Watauga county were hung up in the Methodist church by Mrs. W. C. Coffey with the design that they might be prayed for by the congregation. The boys can feel ! that their friends back home are re membering them wherever they may go. I The Coats and Suits We Sell Need No Introduction To Those Who Have Worn Them. Tl Winter, redoubling his attacks, The field, the roof lays bare; The prudfent birds will love and song To distant climes repair. Yet in their calm retreat to us, Their constant thoughts shall cling; She birds, that winter drives away, Wiill come again with spring. Fate into exile drives them forth; We mourn it more than they; The palace and the cottage walls Have echoed with their lay, Then let them, on some tranquil shore To happier people sing. The birds that winter drives away, Will come again with spring. Fast to this spot we, hapljetes birds With envy see them fly; Already dark and muttering clouds O'erhang the northern sky, Ah, happy, who for some brief space Can flee on rapid wing, The birds, that winter drives away, W?ll come again with spring, They'll think upon the pain well feei, And when the storm is past Will seek again the aged oak That braved so oft the blast, Signs of glad days more con stant then To our rich vale to bring The birds that winter drives away, Will come again with spring. Pierce Jean de Beranger. GRANDSON OF JEFFERSON DAVIS A LIEUTENANT A grandson of Jefferson Davis, president of the Southern Confed eracy, is a soldier in Camp Greene, Charlotte. Ha is Jefferson Hayes Davis, lieutenant in a company from Colorado An older daughter of Jefferson Davis married Mr. Hayes of Colorado and after her' father's death, to perpetuate the family name, it was changed to Davis. Lieuten ant Hay is Davis djidin't advertise the fact, as he might have done with profit when he came to Charlotte, that he was a grandson of Jefferson Davis, and he seems to have been discovered by accident. All of which will indicate that Lieut. Da vis is all right. He isn't depending on his grandfather's name to take him anywhere. Statesville Landmark. Raleijgli, Oct. 17. :In a thrilling peroration on Liberty Bonds, beau tifully woven into an address open ing the 57th annual state fair, Gov ernor Bickett insisted upon the lib eral purchase of these bonds by the farmers of the state. "Bread, Bacon, Buttermilk and Bonds," was the theme of the address. "'This is the first time such an ex hibit has ever been seen at any fair in the United States. It is some thing entirely new under the sun. This exhibit has in it more of strength than the lordly head of the herd the more warmth than the fleece of the leader of the flocks. It will carry you farther and Caster than the fleetest descendant of John R. Gentry and Nancy Hanks and sustain you longer than the fattest poker in all the land. There is in it more of solid comfort to the inner man than in possum and potatoes and more of juicy sweetness than in all the apples for which our first an cestors threw " Paradise away. "'It is absolutely free from the un certainty that racfks nerves land from the taxes that make the grasshopper a burden and mourners go about the streets. It will add to the glory of youth and to the gran deur of age. In it you can hear a cannon roar to save a little child and see ten million men leap forward to die that others may truly live. It is preferred stock m the 'Gem of the Ocean.' it is star dust from Old Glory. It is the soul of the Red, Wihite and Blue. It is the happiness J 111 1 it m . m oi au ianas, xne satety ot all seas, the fadeless glory of all skies. It is a United States Liberty bond i i ruy one ana live iorever m your Own esteem and in the love and grat itude of a world you helped to save.'' iThe governor was introduced by President R. O. Everett of the fair association, who said the war condi tions have afforded the fair new op portunities to the state for conservation. D a E3 I o morrow Thursday Oct. 18. By the seizure of Oesel and Dago islands the military situation on the Riga front is considerably altered, though only guesses can as yet be made as the immediate purpose of the Germans. The move causes no surprise, becaues, it was taken a& a matter of course, when the Ger man government divulged the secret of the German mutiny, that plans had been laid for- counteracting whatever loss of prestige was involv ed by a naval coup. Some naval "rriters thought that a new sally into the North sea might be imminent, but a move, in the Baltic not only is safer, but has more strategic value. The mutiny, in fact, helps to explain the mystery of the failure of the German naval menace to ma terialize. Reports from Amsterdam as to the spread of revolt in the Baltic fleet may be overcolored, but even if there was no overt mutiny there may well have been such un certainty as to the temper of the crews as to compel the abandonment of plans for using the navy to rein force the menace to Petrograd. Such a stroke now would be ap preciably less menacing than if made at the time of the drive on Risra late in August, which was pre cisely the time when the mutiny occurred. It would still, however, be possible by the co-operation of ar mv and fleet to make the Russians much trouble, specially as winter comes later along the Baltic thau inland. Throughout the war naval ! operations in the Baltic have had creat strategic importance, and pos sibly a military Sherlock Holmes might have detected the German mu i tinv a month ago simply from the mysterious failure of the fleet to car. ! rv out operations for which it was , known to have prepared, and for which the opportunity was unique. j But perhaps mutiny in the German navy was the last thing of which outsiders, would have thought. v Sealed bids, addressed to the un dersigned, will ib received by the City Council of the City of Hickory, North Carolina until October 30th. 1917 at 8 o'clock p. m. for the sale of each or any or all of the follow mg four issues o bonds of said City of Hickory, dated Oct. 1, 1917, bearing interest at 6 per centum per annum payable semi-annually.
