MONDAY, NOV. 19, 1917 ... j Although it does not appear thft Germany is weakening, it should bp borne in mind that the chief poweij. of the central alliance ha hadi'wt of the burdens to cajry. fa the w and that the tape hya been ' .r dous. Had; ot the f . tremen been well, drilled ' merman people tool for , fcney would not have tfr a war of conquest, and . are plenty of indications that all of them are not in favor of snatching land from their neighbors. We will be surprised if the German people do not howl mightily next spring when they learn that the Meat victorv over the Italians r - " v brought peace no nearer for them The Methodist conference at Ashe ville, like other gatherings of its na ture, is patriotic to a high degree, as was shown Saturday when leave of absence was granted a young minis ter who had volunteered for the war- not as chaplain, but as soldier. Bish op Wtilson added his blessings, and the great body of Methodists showed its true feelings in a burst of ap plause over the announcement. Statesville, Nov. 19. Sheriff M. P. Alexander and Deputy, Sheriff X L. Wood&ide, went to Mooresville Sun day morning and arrested Atlee Da vis and- John Moose, Iredell county young men wanted at Camp Sevier for desertion. A telegraphic re quest came to the sheriff late Sat urday afternoon apprising him of the fact that the boys had deserted and asking that he apprehend them if possible. Both men were found at their homes and were brought Statesvilte and lodged in jail pending instructions from the commnding officer at Camp Sevier as to their- di$h posal. Both boys wex volunteers, having been member of the Iredell Blues, a local mita?? organization, for the past several years, and each of them saw service on the Mexican border during the trouble with Mex ico . last yjear. ,Whep questioned concerning their motive for leaving camp without permission, both stat ed that such action-was common at Camp Sevier, and that they intended returning voluntarily after spending a few days with relatives. Prince William W,ied, the formei Prince of Albania, has by no means given up hopes of regaining the realm which he ruled over for sx short and troubled a period immediately prior to the great European conflagration. His latest step has been to send a memorial to the German federal jwrinces, wherein be deals at length with the development of Albanian af fairs and protests against the pro tectorate of Albania proclaimed by Italy He argues that an inde pendent Albanian offers the secure?Jc basis for a lasting peace in the ai kans, and that is is therefore, jn he interests of Germany an'' Austria Further Prince Williar aagserts his' own rights to the th;one of Albania. There will ,be a meeting of the Uniform Knights of Pythias Tuesday night) November 20. at 7:30 s .rp. All members are requested to be present. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNERS Secretary Tumulty, who is a Cath olic, probably is as devoted to Pres ident Wilson as any man in the offi cial family and these senseless ru mors about him are circulated for no other purpose than to make him re sign. But they are rank cowards who fight Tumulty in this way. It is said that John Motley More head probably will be a candidate for congress against Representative Webb, but we shall know more about it after the Republican clubs meet here on Tuesday, November 27. There should be something more than well denned rumors after this date. rederick the Great used to say that he made wars and allowed the learned professors to come along la ter and justify them, or words to that effect. Persons who like to compare the allies with Germany in making war should bear in mind that Germans have been taught to believe in this sort of business and it is a part of their religion. 4 The Italians are holding their lines in spite of everything, and in a few more days at latest the French should be there in large numbers if indeed the French are not al ready on the scene. The Y. M. C. A. army campaign has closed and your contribution has helped. If you have done as much as you could, you have every reason to feel joyful in a fine work. While the western front is the ma jor field of operations and always will remain the most important, the allies hereafter will not overlook any side bets. John Motley Morehead enjoys con siderable prestige in North Carolina. He will not be a candidate against Senator Simmons.
