WEDNESDAY, DEC. 5, 1917 A WOULD APPEAL President Wilson's address to con gress, in which he urges a declara tion of war against Austria-Hungary, is rightly regarded as the most remarkable state paper contributed by this most remarkable man. In ringing tones he recalls the world to its task of defeating the sinister rulers who not only have brought the world to a sad pass, but have dragged the German people down to shame. As Austria is a willing or unwilling vas sal of the Prussian lords, it is neces sary that war also be made vigorous ly against this government. The president again speaks for the liberal sentiment of the world when he declares that the United States and the allies do not want to destroy the German empire; if his words do not burn with the indigna tion of the words of British and French statesmen it is because our country fortunately has not suffered as their countries, it is because our lands have not been devastated and our men and women carried in to slavery and worse. The United States will not make peace until the wrongs of these in jured nations and people, including Serbia and Rumania, are righted, and the German people can have peace the minute they are willing to make good the terrible wrongs com mitted in the name of their masters A liberal himself, opposed to war from nature, hating wrong with the religious Scot's zeal, President Wil son was able to bring another in dictment against the Prussian mil itary machine that will burn on the pages of history and' that will reach the consciences of the. German peo pie themselves if not now, then la ter, when they see that the evil schemes of their masters cannon be realized. In a larger way, the address i3 an appeal to the liberal sentiment of the world, a bid to the people of all nations to prevent the establishment and perpetuity of such a monster, a Thing, as he calls it, from drawing its evil tentacles around the throats of the world. When the world is freed from this horrid Thing, the people themselves will see that its like will never become a menace again. It is entirely fitting that the head of the greatest republic in the world, while declaring the inten tion of its people to fight for the overthrow of Prussianism, also as sures the peoples of the world, though they make no pretenses to being Super-men, that they have a place by right in the sun It is a message of deliverance. TELLING THE WORLD The importance of President Wil son's address was not over-emphasized and it was well that it should have been placed in reach of every nation under the sun on the day of its delivery. The point has been made frequently that all the world formerly knew of the United States was that it had trusts and sensa tional murder trials, and too little effort wa3 made to give foreign people a true insight into this coun try and its people. Foreign newspa pers published only scraps of news because of the high cable tolls and by the time the details, were avail able, the public was not interested. In that way the United States was put to a disadvantage that all of its virtues could not overcome. The world will read Mr. Wilson's ad dress to congress while it is warm. In this way it will b 10 times as effective. A MINT TO RUSSIA Tresident Wilson's address to con gress was timely in another respect. It declared that the United States would not make peace with Germany until the German people had re sponsible rulers, and until the Ger mans had receded from the territory they had obtained by conquest. Just at this time the force of this last declaration is particularly pertinent, since Russia is about to make peace with the central powers. If Ger many is sincere, let it return Rus sian provinces let its Jarmies be recalled to its own frontier; and then talk of peace. The bolshe viki, which is German through and through, will not profit by the pres ident's wisdom, but surely there are millions of people in Russia who will see the force of his words. The president makes his bid not to the crowned heads of Europe, but di rectly to the people, including the people of Germany and Austria. Hon. W. E. Chandler, who as sec retary of the navy under President, TO Arthur is said to have done mucli1 to establish the modern American j ;g is best known in the soutn j fa In the declaration of war against Austria-Hungary, we have been told, there will be only one dissenting Kate Representative London Mey er, Socialist. Miss Jeanette Ran kin, the" woman representative, will cast her vote in the affirmative, we are told. Wjell, we can see pretty soon. MR. ROWE AT HICKORY , The Catawba County News says: The News congratulates the Hick ory church upon securing the ser vices of Rev. W. W. Rowe. He is a child of that congregation. He was confirmed as a member of that church in his boyhood days by Dr. Murphy. It is quite an honor to Mr. Rowe to be called back to th home of his childhood days to become the spir itual leader of those people among whom he grew to manhood. The Reformed church at Hickory is a strong one in a financial way and has large possibilities and Mr. Rowe will have a great opportunity and a great responsibility. Those people as a church can and will do large things if they are lead and guided as they may be. What the congregation has done in the past ought to be and will be a great in spiration for even greater things in the future. We congratulate both pastor and people of Hickory. His death i EJ recalls the fact that there are few like him, north or south, the worst passing when Senator Forakar died in Ohio some time ago. Mr. Chandler, as the Statesville Land mark observes, was an able man. American troops are supposed to be near Nancy, within striking dis tance of Germany through Lorraine. Some military critics believe it is that this point that the great bat tles of 1918 will be fought, when the allies, after having prized the Germans from most of northern France, will set about the task of driving a wedge into Germany it self. It may be accident, but it is more likely design that American troops should have been sent to this sector for their preparation. Mr. Bryan Caldwell, who is on a visit to Newton from Michigan, brings word that the west is brim ming with patriotism and that the fellow who is not supporting the government is not considered a good citizen. There are very few sec tions of the country where any con siderable number of men can be found who are not doing as much as they can for the government that protects them. Capt. F. M. Jordan, who investi gated the fire that destroyed the Salisbury graded school building, reported that there was evidence that gamblers had been using the building. The investigator also found that gamblers had been us ing a Salisbury church to carry on their business. 3 E3 S m a a a Ei GJ a El H Q n a i Special at Pastime This Afternoon and Tonight MME.
