I'llIDAY, DEC. 11, vm ThE WAli SITUATION . .:i.u.,' I'.iiL'd to bleed France ..... V.i.u.i, the l.tTiuans have i ... ;n if tiu-.r time on the de- le.i.-ive njj.iinnt the British and sometimes the French until the last few d.iys when, they have struck hard at the ir most hated enemies. There is some point to. the state ment of a high London authority which iLcLir. that the Teutons have made a tremendous effort to incline Great Britain to peace by des perate attacks by land and sea. These have failed. The allied navies are taking care of many submarines and the ship yarsd are replacing vessels almost as fast as they are sunk. The sub .'iiarin? is not gaining in the cam paign against allied shipping, and as tha American yards get busy, the U-bcnt w"l! 'ose ground. The firht is hopelr.'s. so far as the Germans are concerned. In rending the war news, we are too likely to be influenced by our lir ers or our nerves; we consider the news of one day or a few days and conclude from that news that the world is safe or is doomed. What we should take into consideration is a fact that the German general staff has not underrated howerer much it may sneer at American ef fort and that is the part the Un ited States will play in the war. Germany knowi we have put mere than a drop in the bucket; Germany knowt that the United States will make defeat for that country eure and certain, and the vigorous cam paigns on land nnd sea are for the purpose of making the allies quit or convincing Teutons that their armies cannot be defeated. If the Germans are willing to start an offensive this winter, Am ericans should be willing. That of fensive will not succeed, and the task next spring and summer will be the easier for Great Britain and the United States. The German people, whose position is more un comfortable than that of the allies will clamor for peace. ,orth Carolinians, with abundance in sight, have never beeh given to worrying oyer the future. We could have protected the fish" that belong to the whole country if we had shown wisdom, but people seldom show, wisdom until they are hit. The food that is due us at reason ible prices has been squandered. A few more days like the last few and we shall buy an orange farm in Panama. The sunny south Vgosh. in summer, MUS. HARBIN'S GRANDSON WINS FRESHMAN DEBATE Friends of Mrs. Alice Harbin of Hickory will b interested in a news story from Ch,apel Hill telling of the honor won by her grandson, Mr. Charles Boyd of Gastonia. The storr follows: Another Gaston, county fresh man has brought laurels both to himself and to his home count. This time it is Chas. Boyd of Gas onia. who won the freshman debat V prize in the Di Society on last ":iturdav night. The question was, 'TJe.xolved That it wonld be to the Vst interests of all cities having a .vpulation of 5,000 or more to ad opt the commission form of gov-u-nnumt." Mr. Boyd, assisted by Mr. Bobbitt of Charlotte, argued against the commission system. On he affirmative side wore Messrs. V. T. Rmathers and M. II. Patterson. Mr. Smathers was on tho winning, ,-ide in the final debate for the Ay-1 cvk Cup Inst, it will be remember- !. Mr. Boyd and all the speakers j 'or that matter, showed that they i:ul received wonderful training in j heir high school days. This same j ".onor was achieved a year ago u "tr. T. J. Brawley of Gastonia. The isbate this year was of a very high standard, even above the freshman debates of the past." I Professional I Cards Dr. W. B. COTTRELL REGISTERED NURSE PHONE 113-J II SCARCITY OF FISH The semi-annual fish rows in the general' assembly have mildly inter ested members from the central and western part of tho gtate, who look ed upon thern much as they would two dogs fighting. Occasionally, however, there have been represen tatives whose people were not di ' rectly affected that have tried se riously to understand the situation and a result of this is to bo seen in tho fish commission that has been on the job for several years. But the people of the state as a whole, their membera in the gener al assembly included, have felt that the fish problem was one that con cerned only the counties where the fish are caught. That has been' the general attitude. And Beaufort, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Carteret, Ons low, Bertie and other counties would send representatives to Ral eigh intent on seeing that their fishermen were allowed to make all Jtho catches. The various nets were described, and one representa tive would differ from another as night from day. Very few people made a serious effort to consider the fish situation. Though North Carolina has more riv ers, inlets and sounds places where fish and oysters naturally breed than any other state on the Atlantic seaboard, it is a fact that any num ber of states catch more fish than we, and Virginia and Maryland oys ter production is remarkable com pared to ours. We are not placing the blame. A MUSEMENTS i 3 MWESliE CHARLIE CHAPLIN AT PASTIME SATURDAY tr": t-j S3 MARY FICKFORD In "A ROMANCE CF. THE REDWOODS" At PASTIME One Day Only Tuesday, December 18th.
