The country must guard against such outrages and if necessary and it is beginning to appear that is lino a few hundreds or thous ands of alien spies up against a wall and shoot them. This country cannot wage a war abroad as long as it will not recog nize enemies at home. IVERY SafefDriver PHNE LUTZ'S DRUG STORE 17 and 317 The state board of health is advis ing that every precaution be taken during the Christmas holidays to prevent pneumonia. "At one time," says the board, "there was thought to be no way to prevent this dread ed disease, but we are gradually learning, through costly experiences, however, some facts about this cap tain of the men of death.' AND N.-W Southbound We trust that those people who have been raging at the army for al loged regulations that permit wrong conduct have read what Secretary Uaker gave out the exact language of the regulations. The army is not perfect, but there is nothing in the regulations that will make a snob out of a man. The truth is, some of the civil fools have gone into the army ibut not all, judging from some newspaper comments. Col. Is'iac Lewis ran up against the same bricks that almost every prophet, encounters in his home country when he tried to penetrate the war department with his famous machine gun. American troops in France, however, are using that gun, thanks to the foresight of the British. nr rH ip'Ivk' knows, the in- MM " g ' " n D Sweet I hi diptheria. According to Dr. Matthias Nic- all, Jr., o f the New York State health department, pneumonia is con tracted in two ways. One patient .. uiacaac u v Hdv- . The preventive measures then must come under two heads those directed acrainst the 1 ower- ing of bodily resistance, and those directed against the spread of infec tion. "The most important factors cre ating a lowered resistance, Dr. Nicoll mentions, are the use of al cohol, bodily fatigue, sudden or pro- ionKeu cnining and tne neglect of the 'common cold.' He says nearly all pneumonias are pheceded by so called colds.' As to measures di rected toward diminishing the spread of the infection, he says that the influence of overcrowding in spreading infection cannot be over estimated such as is met in camps, schools, offices, railroad coaches, en tertainments and in the houses of the poor. "As to preventing the spread by carriers, educational campaigns must be conducted against spitting in public places, coughing and sneez ing without the use .of handkerchief, kissing, and using the common drink ing cup. Dr. Nicholl believes that pneumonia should not only be made a reportable disease but that pa tients be quarantined until their sputum shows to be free from the organisms."
