Mr. M. W. Brabham, Y. M. C. A. secretary at Fort Caswell, gave us a most interesting and helpful talk on "Helps and Hindrances of Ma chinery." We regret so much that a single member was absent. A number of visitors was another wel come attraction and we hope they will come again. We are glad in deed to have Miss Irene Sherrill back in the class. JMis3 Lily Hahn extends a cordial invitation to the class to meet with her Friday night for the purpose of filling scrap books for the sick sol diers. This is a pleasure and a privilege that we cannot afford to ignore. Let everyone who can pos sibly attend, do so. Mothers who have small children are urged to attend church and let members of our class care for the babies during service. It will be a pleasure. We will have another interesting speaker next Sunday. Be sure to be there. REPORTER UUMILLIL UUIUU Ul EVERY NURSE IN LAND: WHAT HE NOTED ABROAD In response to a recent appeal from the government for a complete sur- vey or census of all women who can' render nursing aid to civil and mili-j tary populations of this country and its allies, the southern division of the' American Red Cross, through its re cently appointed manager, Mr. Eu gene Black of Atlanta, has planned a complete organization to procure this information as soon as possi ble, and the first step in this direct ion is the appointment by Mr. Black of Mr. Frank E. GMlaway as di vision supervisor of the nursing sur vey. Under the direction of Mr. Cal laway and in close cooperation with the division bureau of nursinc and the chapter committees already es tablished, the work of locating every woman qualified for nursing in any! way will be immediately begun in the southern division. The department of nursing of the' American Red Cross up to August 1918 had transferred 10,000 nurses to the surgeon general of the army. The quota required by January 1919 is 25,000. The southern division has received full instructions from national head quarters at Washington in regard to the methods of carrying on this work and the full cooperation of the pub lic is earnestly solicited in securing aists of nurses. Individuals, such 'as physiciains, clergymen, pharma sists, etc., may each help in furnish ing to the local Red Cross chapter the names of nurses in their individ ual localities, while nurses' clubs, organizations of nurses for registra tion, hospitals, women's clubs, health societies, boards of health and charity organizations of all kinds are also sources from which information as to nurses in the various territo ries may be located. It is most necessary to procure J this information as soon as possi ble, hence the fullest cooperation from every source is earnestly desir ed and the division supervisor will greatly appreciate any information which may be sent him. Question naires will be furnished to nurses and a card index wlil be compiled from these blanks -so that at the comple tion of the survey it is hoped that the name of every woman in the United States who is fitted for nursing, whether she is at present or has re cently been engaged in this work, will be known and the particular fit ness of each one will also be fully understood. "That question was answered at the battle of Chateau Thierry and the advance from the Marne to the Vesle. The effect was electric. It was a revelation to friend and foe alike I of the valor, dash and fighting qual 1 ity, and military effectiveness of the new American army. And the reflex ! effect on the spirit and morale of our European allies cannot be overestimated. "Indeed," exclaimed Dr. Schurman, "it is impossible for any one who was not in England or France at the time to form any conception of I the way in which that fight at Cha teau Thierry stimulated, encouraged and inspired the armies and civilian population of those countries. "After four years of war all the belligerents can see the end of their reserves of men and materials of war. Hence, the augmentation of the a'.lied armies and the multiplica tion of their supplies of every kind must more and more devolve upon America. In this sense, America is called upcm to win the w;ar. And I have not met in Europe either an American officer or soldier who does not recognize that the only way of winning the war is a military decis ion by force. "They are all of the opinion that Germany must be whipped to her knees. Any other settlement would leave our civilization at the mercy of the brutal, egotistic and autocratic militarism, which the Hohenzollerns have enthroned in Germany."
