Brooks, the superinten dent of public instruction of North Carolina, in his address at the press banquet at the O. Henry Hotel Thurs day night greatly impressed the editors by his intelligent and compre hensive grasp of the educational situation in the state. He spoke briefly but earnestly on two lines which he said are vital to our prod-ess in the educational field. One of them was the need of better trained teachers, an old topic, which he pre sented in a new light. He told us that cf the 12,000 white teachers in the state, 10 000 of them cannot pass a creditable high school examination. Only 2,000 are really qualified to teach the children in our common schools. The state will never rise frcm the low place it occupies among the sisterhood of states in the mat ter of education, until we secure teach ers who are fit to teach. Already we are expendinf more than two mil lion dollars for the noor service we are receiving, and which is doing so little to raise the standard. Many times that much money must be ex pended before we see even the dawn of a better day.. We rejoice that, succeeding Dr. Joyner, in the great work of leading cur educational forces, we have a man so well furnished by nature and by grace to do the large work committed to his hands.
