Dr. Mc'Bee'i Mluion.
The Greenville Piedmont says
that Dr. Silas McBee, Editor of The
Churchman, New York, who is
well known in Greenville, where
he has a number of relatives and
close friends,, made a visit to the
Czar of Russia last Saturday and
talked for in hour on the subioct
of better1, understanding between
the Churches that would lead to
closer ties and common action.
Dr. McBee will also have conferen
ces with Primier Stolypio, Metro
politans Antony and Vladimir,
S. M. LoukianefF, chief procurator
of the Holy Synod and Peter Iswol
sky, former procurator. These
gentlemen are all said to be inter
ested in the movement to get the
churches closer together. - The
Piedmont says that the life ambi
tion of Dr. McBee is "to have a
Closer union of the churches to
make them all one great big body
working for the salvation of men's
souls. He realizes that it will take
many many, years to do this, but
he has set about his task and is
working faithfully on it " That is
indeed, a noble ambition and a
great undertaking. ,It may not
come to pass in Dr. MoBee's day
but the seed which he is sowing
will no doubt bear fruit In the
course of time. Charlotte Chroni

. Lila Wood, colored, who for
more than a century has lived on
the Ramsey and Brawley places
in the vicinity of Shepherds, pass,
ed away Monday, after an illness
of only a few days. Men who are
old and bent with age say that
"Aunt Lila" was an old woman
when they were boys, and from
their family records and recnllec
tions, "Aunt Lila" was in her
115th year when she died. This
belief is substantiated by Mr. J,
b. Brawley, of Mooresville and
Mr. H. A. Smith, of Shepherds.
Mr. S. 8. Mauney, of this place
informed us that he cut a pine tree
on one of his tracts of land ("the
Plonk place) from which he cut 7
saw logs each measuring 10 feet in
length. The first cut measured 4
feet in diameter and the last one 2
feet He also cut three cords of
wood from the top. According to
Mr. Mauney's calculation the three
is worth twenty five dollars, at
the present price of lumber and
wood. v

NEGRO STABBED TO DEATH.
Family Quarrel Renewed With Fatal

Charlotte Observer,
Shelby, Feb. 13. In a drunken
brawl in "Freedom," the negro
district of the city, yesterday af
ternoon, Abe Jolly was stabbed in
the heart with a penknife and
died a few minutes afterwards. His
assaliant, Logue Young made his
escape but officers pursued him and
a telephone message this afternoon -said
he had been captured at Gaff
ney, S. C. The negroes tried to
keep the murder a secret and it
was four hours after the fatal stab
until officers and a physician were
sent for.
Jolly married Young's sister.
It seems they had a family quarrel
two weeks ago and Young went to
Jollys house to have it out. He
renewed the difficulty taking sides
with his sister against her husband.
All were drinking and a number of
negroes had gathered at Jolly's
house, a rendezvous on Sunday af
ternoons. Jolly and Young threw
rocks at each other out in the yard
and incensed with cheap liquor.
they plunged together and in the
clinch, Young stabbed him in the
leftside with a penknife. Strange
to say the wound did not bleed but
few drops and the seriousness
of his condition was not known
until he was dead. His wife tried
to separate them and after Jolly
fell to the ground she supposed he
was drunk and not wounded.
When he was carried into the house
life had left him.
Young was traced all last night
and today the authorities located
him at Gaffney. He was arrested
and will be brought back to stand
trial at the March term of court.
