Freights on the river are virtually at a stand still, and the tourists traffic of oth er days is no more. Hence docks are deserted and hotels empty. Strasbourg’s factories are almost all closed down. The canal connect ing the city with the Rhine is fill ed with idle ships. There is little ac tivity on the railroad yards, and few trains cross the bridge. Tour ist* have turned to other routes where, travel is easier and not sub ject to military interference, and the local hotels and cafes are emp ty. With its 300,00(1 inhabitants Strasbourg is in a sad plight, and can be likened to a deserted or phan. Hundreds of idle ships fthd barges, line the can als and the banks of the huge inner harbor, while the extensive railroad! yards are filled with dead locomo tives and freight cars. The streets of the city are rel atively deserted.
