He was called here to preach the funeral of Mr. Daniel Hines, who lives on Beaverdam. Judge Hoke has purchased a fine Kentucky mare; It arrived th.e other day. The editor will at tend to that part of The Demo crat. Mr. Wm. Goodman, of Bell- wood, Cleveland County is dead. He was buried at Bellwood last Friday. He was a son of Mr. Jno. Turkey I oiling tit Hiiry On last Friday we learn that a number of ladies and gentleman engaged in what id called a "Tur key Rolling" near Henry, this county. A wheelbarrow is rolled by each party who is blindfolded. The one rolling the wheelbarrow nearest the goal wins turkey. We have often heard of men doing the ike, but the addition of ladies is new. Xeiitli of Mr, Dan'l IIIiiom Mr DanielShuford Hin&Vvho lived on Beaverdam, Gaston coun ty, died on December 28, 1S95. He was bom in tho year 1810. He was 85 years and 12 days old. He had been in feeble health sine last October. He was married in 1836 to Miss Susannah Hoti. To them' ten children were born. Three children are" dead. He leaves 19 grandchildren, one brother and one sister. He was a consistent member of the Lutheran church since his earlv manhood He was buried in the family bury ing ground near his residence, Rev. J. F. Moscr conducting the funer al services. Mr. Hines was a good citizen and the oldest man in his communnity. Murdornt XMutcmu. On Christmas day about one and a half miles west of Plateau, Catawba County, Charley White shot and killed Bob Warlick. It seems that White and Warlick's brother George got into a quarrel, when Bob came up and interfered, saying he would settle the trouble with White. After some words between George Warlick and White, White started home. Bob Warlick followed White, living he would kill him. White told Warlick not to follow him, but Warlick came on. White turned and shot Warlick with a shot gun. It is said that 52 shot penet rated the body of Warlick, who died an hour after he was shot. White was arrested and given u hearing and was bound over to court in a bond of $500. George Warlick was also arrested and failed to give bond and was sent to jail. This row occurred in Catawba -count v. it is said all the parties were under theintluence of liquor. Mr. Will Speck, who was well known here, died of typhoid pneu monia at Palatka, Fla , last Tues day night His many friends will be. pained to learn of the death of Mr. Speck, who had just reached mature manhood, and had bright prospects ahead of him. We can not print lectures and sermons on Sabbath breaking and whiskey drinking. Do not send us such items. We believe in morality as much a3 you do, but we are not conducting a religious paper. Robinson left Wed nesday for Shelby where he ap pears in the election case of Quinn against Lattimore for the posses sion of the office of Clerk of Su perior Court. Mr. Robinson ap pears for Quinn. Ex. Judge Bur well is referee. Mr. J. . Leonhardl has bven very iow ior some xime and was not exfected to live, but through the faithfulness of Drs. Thoruts Cioode and Dr. Grouse, he is im proving. The Rev. Mr. IMyler is also very sick from overwork and exposure in ministerial work in the eat tern part of tho State. He is under the mHdical cam of Dr. Goode. I think we can attribute the small amount of whiskey-drink ing which was maiuiesletl among Racket Store. Co mo this way if you want to Fire Near ReepMville. The barn and out houses of Mr. Pink Cansler were burned Christ mas week. The fire occurred near the middle of the afternoon. The wife of Mr. Reep, the tenant, occu pying the dwelling house near by, discovered the . lire soon after it originated. It seemed to proceed from the centre of the building. The loss is estimated at $200 or $300. No insurance. A Clirlnmas FJgut. Ike Mauuey and Will Houck, of near this nlace. violated the law by fighting on Christmas morning. Mauney used a brick bat on Houck and cut four gashes in Houck's head. Dr. Sain sewed up the cuts for Houck. . Mauney is a one arm ed man. The pugilists were ar rested and given a hearing before S. P. Sherrill. Esq. Both were bound over to court. Runaway near Town. On Christmas eve, the horses attached to a wagon belonging to Jeff Smith,ran awav. Mr. Smith's little son was driving the team at the time. . He was thrown off the, wagon and got tangled inoueot tne, wheels and received some severe bruises about the head. Dr. Cost-' ner dressed the wounds and the boy is now getting well. The ac cident occurred about one half mile from Lincolnton on the Mor gan ton road. Rev. Mr. Sox conducted Cnrist mas day services at Daniel's church, 5 miles from town. Rev. Sox is from Hickory, N. C. There were Christmas services at St. Luke's. Episcopal churchy Lincolnton. on Xmas day. Kevv Dr. Wetmore preached. Dance at IN'ortli Statu Hotel. On last Friday night the most enjoyable dance of the season was given by the young men of Lin colnton complimentary to the la dies of this town and the visiting young ladies. The dining room of the North State Hotel was ar ranged and fitted up for a dancing Hall. A brilliant company gathered to do honor to the occa sion. The following ladies and gentlemen attended : Miss Eva Sumner, in yellow silk, with Mr. B. A. Justice; Miss Alice Grigg, in pink silk with chiffon trimming, with Mr. S. G. Finley; Miss Prue Crouse, white silk,, with Mr. J. M. Connor, Cokesburyt S. C; Miss Helen Hodges, Hodges, S. C, white or gandie, with Mr, E. W. Ward, Jr. Miss Josie Pharr, pink silk, with Mr. Will Sumner; Miss Virginia Hoke, in pink cashmere, with Mr. Thos. As the choir sang Joy to the World the Lord is Come" and "I'll Stand by my Sunday School,1 we were reminded that Christmas should net be spent In enjoyment of sinful amusements. A Christmas entertainment was held at Reepsville Academy on Wednesday evening. Maiic was furnished by Menrs. John Wood. Monroe Weaver, Jsmes and Jest Warlick.
