That means that the Senator does not longer regard a revenue tariff, individual liberty, States rights, and the like, as able to hold him in t he Democratic par ty. It does seem to ng that a man is a poor Democrat who will aban don his guns to chase a jacS-o-lantern.. We really have not the time to argue with the Lincoln Patriot as to whether a man may be a pro tectionist and a Democrat at the same time. We said what we be-1-lie-ved and what the party plat forms have very generally war ranted us in saying. However we call the attention of the Patriots pivu;;uuuisi to me iact that there is a dividing line somewhere between Democracy and Republi canism. If you do not draw this line on the question of taxation, why draw it at all? Why, if Jack son atfd all other Democrats were Republicans, why have two party "names in this year of grace 1896? iThe .Raleigh correspondent ot the Charlotte Observer said the Other day. that it was conceded that 'McKinley will get the votes ot ocracic party of this State should bolt the action of the Chicago con vention of the party this year un less it declares for certain doc trines, has been advanced and ad vocated in certain quarters; there fore be it resolved, 1. That it is the sense of this convention that such a course is not to be thought of, and that the delegates of this county to the Stato convention are hereby instructed to vote only for such delegates to Chicago as will stand by the plan torm of the partv to be made in National Convention this year. 2. lhat we are not in favor of allowing any delegates to sit.iu our State convention who announces in advance that they will bolt the action of the party at Chicago or any where else. The above resolution were de feated after the point ws ma'de that there was talk of boltinc in many quarters, and that these res olutions were only intended to put Catawba on record against such methods. The majority of the convention said that such resolutions were an insult to their Democracy, that such resolutions were a defense in advance of an attack and th like. But the greatest applause was won by a delegate wheu he said he would not bolt if he, was tteated fairly at Chicago, otherwise he would not stick 1 It appears to us that these resolutions could have done no harm. If, for instance. men like J arvis, McCrae and Cham bers Smith, who announces in ad vance that they will bolt, are to Mnjor McKlnley's Position.
