E. RAMSAUR, Wm. HULL, Interacted to Dereive. The last plank' of Ihe Populist platform adopted at their State convention is too bare fuceda piece of hypocrisy to decaiveeveu the most ignorant. It is in the follow ing words: "In order to le?p our public servants in thorough touch and sympathy with the oppressed mass es and to check, to some extent the scramble for office, we demand a reduction of salaries until such time as through an increase of the currency the price of property and' products will justify the present rate." If our Populist friends are real ly sincere in their demands for "a reduction of salaries" why did they not enforce this demand wheu thev m had the power? In other words, why did not the Legislature, id which they were all powertul, pass a law for the reduction of salaries? Please answer, why? Even if the next Leg;slature should pass a law for the reduction ot salaries it could not apply to the officers who will be elected next November, because no officer's sal ary can be reduced during the term for which he was elected. Iu other words, the Governor aud other State officers elected next Novem ber will be entitled during the whole ot their term for the next four vears to the same salaries that are now paid to our present Governor and other State officers. Aud the next legislature cannot re duce their salaries. But the last Legislature could have reduced hem I Why? Because the last Legislature :ould have legally passed a law for a reduction of tho salaries of all officers hereafter to be elected, and f such a law bad then been passed it would have reduced the salaries of the officers who will be elected his year. But why did not the Populist platform, in the above quoted plank, also demand a reduction in the fees oi all officers? Why apply the reductiou only to those officers who receive salaries? Why aot reduce the tees of the couuty offi- Turner ana Wright. - I CoM f.MnrlariS Domocmis. 1 ursuant totherall .f thechair-1 Twenty tV.ur rr.fd standard Dcv man of th executive committee I rratt ( 10 of wb m hie in tirts the Democratic Senatorial cntiven tinri for the ?Jih Senatorial Dis trict met at the Mayor's office, in Hickory at 2 cclock this afternoon. . i. vjBiuiir, oi .eun, wa Ixjru) who have decided o bolt ih C hie co ticket, met in (rcrmhorn Wtduetday to retime and -led dtltgttra ta the fictional conven tion of bolting DiJrvrle which (ii:.M:uAi. m:vn. It is a well known fact that the fees of our couuty officers are a much greater burden to the people than are the salaries of our State officers. Aud it is equally well known that the fees now paid coun ty officers will buy more of the nec essaries and comforts of life than ever before, and that many of these officers are now making more mon ey than any of their predecessors ever did. It is strange and sur prising, therefore, that the Popu list State convention did not de mand a reduction iu the fees of these county officers as well as a reduction in the salaries, ot our State officers. And it is still more surprising that the last Legislature, when it had the power, did not then make a reductiou in both fees and salaries, so that this re-! ductioii could begiu with and ap ply to. all officers who will be elect ed this year I Chatham Record. united and will doubtless make the Senatorial contest warm this vear.
