Sigmon, of Chne township, Sunday evening. Leona, youngost daugh ter 6t Mr. Cliue, aged about 8 years, was the victim of the acci dent. She, with two very small children from the neighborhood, was in a room playing. A quan tity of seed cotton was m the room in which the children had dug a hole some two or three feet deop. By some means little Leona fell head first into this hoi and was suffocated. The other children knew she was in the hole, but from what we can learn they were so small that they did not realize that there wa3 any danger, and left the room without notifying and one about the house. Some time later, as it began to grow dork, little Leona was missed by her parents and inquiries were made about her. Her former com panions said she was in the room on the cotton and the searchers 1 went there to find her body cold in death. The hole was not a large one and in falliag the arms of the child were pinioned to her side so that she could not extricate herself nor could she make a suffi cient outcry to bring assistance. She had been dead between a half hour when her body was discov ered. Hickorv Times. DELANE WILL NOT ACCEPT PF.S1AM FROM RHODES AND YOUNT. To The7.inc.oux Democrat., Sheriff Khodes saya "nothing will satisfy my wrath but toemirch his official acts." To put it mild ly, the average reader will conclude that his "official acta" can stand the smirching if his personal char acter can. Ui course mere is no evidence now in the nanus or tne County Treasurer to show that be and Sheriff Rhodes were engaged in sharp practices. Even an old fietl rabbit has sense enough when t4jumped"to try to cover his tracks by back-tracking. My exposure caused Sheriff Rhodes to back track much sooner than he had ex pected, and he had cans to believe that if the note held by the Treas urer was not taken up and the mon ey paid in the county treasury, for which it stood, before the County commissioners met, there was some danger of being "treed." After borrowing the money, so he could take up the note, he can well as sume an air of defiance and sav he is willing 'for the matter to be in vestigated at any day," but ni- ble men will attribute his readiness I command lb prayr-r f Treas urer Yunt to liim-K and worker in yiu, and if 1 had nt Uen tdd bv Huh- Writ that "the prayer.- f the niclu-d nvnil-th not" I might now have atne hope of their tinul nlv.itin. At no time since the Chicago convention adjourned have the prospetcs for Mr, Bryan's success been so promising as to-day. Mr. Bryan's campaign speaking has been diplomatic, convincing, ef fective. He has made votes every where he spoke, and his speeches have swayed public opinion wher ever printed. His antagonists have manifested their desperation by their repeated changes of front. Just uow. after having failed to convince the people that Mr. Bry an is insane, they are engaged in claiming everything. Next to the fury with which the Republican press denounces the Democracy for trying to elect Bryan i3 the appar ent confidence with which it an nounces he is already defeated. Friends of free silver whatever their party names, for this is no party campaign can afford to ig. facts in the case, do not deny that he settled with the Treasurer by giving his note, but they sayI was mistaken in charging that there was intent to commit a fraud upon the couutv. Now let us see if I were : Worcester defines fraud to mean "deceit in contracts or deal ing; imposition; a cheat; a trick; artifice" Now I submit that I do not understand the meaning of the words if SherilY Rhodes did not practice deceit and imposition on the board of Coanty commirsion ers in making his fiual settlement. Did not his receipts from the County Treasurer purport to rep resent cash payments, when, in re ality, no cash had passed between them tor the receipt held by him? Did he take the trouble to explain this fact to the commissioner? If not, he is guilty of perpetrating a fraud upon the county. Wifl Sher iff Rhodes deny consulting Col H. C.
