In your paper of the 15th 1 see that Hiram L, Grant says, "All Populists for whom we voted (meaning candidates for the Leg islature) promised to vote lor Priicnard." He had fallen into error, at least as far as Mecklen burg is concerned. We are pledged to no man, but are free to vote as we thinK best. The two Republi cans, Clanton and Williamson, were not pledged, but are free to was a tacit understanding that we were all tosapport the county gov ernment and election law, and see that they should be preserved. R. to the Southern, will be greatly relieved to know that the trade is now off. The S. A. L. fur nishes the only southern competi tion the Southern has in this, as well as several other states. Aud the Efficient service of the S. A. L haa forced the Southern to much better accommodations than it formerly gave or would give now but for this' competition. Conse quently the travelling public has reaped a great benefit by the two roads belonging to different syndi cates. It requires the consent ol three-tourths of the stock-holders to sell the road, and a majority of them demand an independent Southern line and will not agree to sell. Cloveland & Carlisle. A Kentucky friend of Secretary Carlisle is authority for the state ment to-day that the law firm f Cleveland fc Carlisle will bo doing business in New York city early in March of the coming year. It is said to bo the intention of the President to provide places for Secretary of Navv Herbert and Post-master General Wilson after March 4th on the bench of the Federal judiciary. There are at present several vacancies, the most desirable of which is the chief jus ticeship of the Court of Claims in this city, and it is said that there will soon be another vacancy of equal importance caused bv the contemplated resignation of Jus tice Cox, ot the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. Wash ington Dispatch, 13th. Senator Pritchard very nearly reiterates to Senator Butler in re. plying to the letter of the latter, what he said of the Populist party at Statesville last spring,, viz: "We needed t them two years ago to get in on, but we do not need them now so d them let them go." - He writes Butler a letter as f ollow8 : -Senator Butler, Dear sir- I have received your letter. I beg to inform you that I have already obtained enough pledges from Populist members .who are eold bugs to make my election certain. Ieter C . Pritchard. Wonder if Mr. L.
