There seems to be no longer any oubt that the Cuban'general, Ari- onio Maceo. is dead. The press dispatches thus tell of he incident : It appears that the Marquis of Ahumeda, who officiated as Cap tain General of Cuba during Wey ler's absence in the field, sent a letter to General Maceo, inviting the Cuban leader to a conference. Maceo, never for a moment think ing that treachery was intended, especially as the invitation came from such a prominent Spaniard as the Marquis of Ahumeda, immedi ately returned an answer, saying that he would bo glad to meet the Spanish general, and, accompanied only by his staff, he went to the rendezvous, little dreaming of the awful fate in store for hira. On arriving at the trocha the Spanish soldiers there, acting under orders , actually saluted the rebel chief tain as he passed, and after reach ing the rendezvous, the Cuban leader was surprised to see, instead of the Marqnis of Ahumeda, a large body of Spanish soldiers, who seemed to come from every side. The actions of the Spanish troops were so suspicious that Maceo felt thut they had him trapped, and his suspicions were confirmed when a peremptory order camo from a splendidly mounted officer to sur render. "Never, " was the reply, and hardly had the word ben'.ujt, ter-d when volley after volleywas poured into the little band of pat riots who, although hemmed in on all sides, outnumbered alfriost;one hundred to one, struck i spurs to their horses, and with cries of "Cuba libre!" rode gallantly to their death, ' Maceo is reported to haVe fallen tho first fire with a bullet through his head, breaking his jaw. An other hit him in the abdomen. .Both were fatal. Young Gdrhez was the second to fall and moments a number of corpses, shot almost beyoi nition, were all that remained of tho gallant Cubans who trusted to Spanish honor. If MrJ Mantle, of Montana, should act with us, as I hope he will, at last on tariff matters, we will have 43. Wo would then need at least two - more votes, together with the vote of tjie Vice President, to secure the .Passage of a tariff act. We hope . to secure those two votes from Ky. and North Carolina . .''The members of the national committee, so far as I know their entiments, are very anxious that a Republican tariff measure should become operative at the beginning of the next fiscal year July 1st. It seems almost evident that no tariff legislation of a satisfactory "character can pass Congress and become law this session. The ex pectation is that such a law can be passed at an extraordinary session called soon at tor the 4th of March. "For myself, I feal that all pro posed financial legislation can be" and ought to be postponed until this country has a chance to test the efforts of the now protective tariff. We are, therefore, not in terested very' much now about money issues, t But it is of the greatest importance to have Sena tors enough thoroughly committed to the protective policy to secure the passage of a tariff bill," The Senator then goes on to say that Senator Pritchafd is known to be a strong protectionist. It was one of the most remarkable revival scenes ever witnessed. Baltimore Dis patch, 13th. It is said that when Gov.
