N. SIMPSON, JR Organization of the Brown Creek (now Union; Association. As it may be of some interest to some of our people to know when and where the l uiou Association came into existence, I will under take to Rive a few facta concerning its organization. It was originally a branch of the Moriah Asoociation of south Caro I mil. That association granted let' ters of dismission to the churches at Mt. Olive, Mt. Moriab, Phila delphia, Monroe aud Faulks to form a new association ; anil for that purpose the following birth ren, representing their respective churches, met at Mt Olive, iu An son county, on iviturday, the iMh day of November, 1S,"4, vix: Wil son Chambers, Michael Itakcr, I). Hushing, I- 11. Alsobrook, K. C. Tiiumoiis lteni. C. Cliears, C, Aus- tin, Peter Paiker, H. II. Parker aud M. V. Moore. 1. Rushing called the meeting to order and 8. Snider led in the opeuing prayer. The delegates then vacated the church to give place for preachiug aud re luired to Wilson Chandlers' school house, where the aNNociation was orgiiiiized by electing 1). Hushing nuMlerator mid Stephen II. Pai ker clerk. The delegate's from Mt. Mo riali and Philadelphia reported that their elm relies had declined to go into the orgiintzatiou. 80 the as sociation was organized with three hurches: Mt. Olive, Mouroe and an Iks. A committee, couHistiug f Wilson Chambers, Michael 1U ker, S. II. Pai ker, C. Austiu and I). Hushing, was appointed to draft const it ut ion, rules of decorum, aud a confession of faith. They unbuilt ted their reiKirt on theMon day following, which was adopted. In this report the new association was dcuomimited the "IirownCreck Association," doubt less on account of (he fuet that the place of orpin i illou was uear the creek wliicb bears that uanie. In 1 SS2, at a ses sion ot the association agaiu held at Mt. Olive, all the churches lo cited in the vicinity of Brown Creek, with others, withdrew to form the Anson Association. 80, in 18S4, at the suggestion of Hev. J. A. Hniiler aud Joel (in liege preached to a large audience, anil were followed by Elder Edward Morton, who "closed the services." The total membership of the as sociation at the time of its oreuni zation was 14, of which Mt. Olive bad K7, Faulks 54, aud Monroe 23. In the records of this meeting no mention is made of missions, or .Sabbath schools, or other denomi national work ; but C. Austin was appointed to prepare a circular let ter to be read at the next session. The church at Monroe was to be the place of tbe next meeting and Saturday before the third Sunday iu Octolcr, ltC., the time. J. W. HI YENS. 5taying a Christian, Llcm'i Herald. Ou a recent Sunday in New York one well-known clergyman preached on the theme, "How to Heroine a Christian,"while another clergyman addressed himself to tho ones! ion, "How to Be a Chris tian." The one theme grows ont of the other. To become a Chris tiaB is very necessary bnt that is only part of tbe matter. The prob lem how to stay a Christian Is ful ly as impoitaut, and perhaps more difficult ol solution. Christian ex perience it not represented by mathematical point, but by a line. Tbe thing is not simply to get into the kingdom, bnt as well to make progress therein. Home peo ple nave an Idea that npon eon version tbey received a ticket giving transportation and parlor Car privileges all the way to the heavenly terminus, ana that after tbe start is once made all they have to do ia lean comfortably back on tbe car cash ions. Tbe proper figure of description for tbe Christian life, however,! not tbe Pullman, but tbe pilgrim metaphor. After becoming a Chris tian by entrance throngs the wick et gate, tbe believer la thereafter obliged to straggle on step by step and day after day, often climbing steep slopes and treading the edge of sharp precipteea, and frequently exposed to the danger of mistaking some treacherous by-path for the main highway. No man ever stays a Christian by force of a were moral Inertia. He keeps ia the kingdom, if at all, only by dint of constant effort, eeasetesa activity, earnest prayer, and alert watchful ness. The same divine grace that enables a man to become a Chris tian in tbe first place will enable bim to be a Christian to tbe glo rious tnd. License and Liberty. I Snaikera Carlailaa Ima. Many men mistake license for lit erty. There la no liberty except la obedience to law. All law is guarded by penalty and sanctioned hv rewards ami puntsnnienisi Obedience to tbe laws of natnie brings its own reward the preaer- atioo of health and the enjoy stem of the physical comforts of life, aud disobedience incur certain pun ishment tbe impairing of the phy sical constitution. Obedience to civil low is rewarded by protection of life and property and by person al liberty as a citisen of Ihe State, and disobedience Is punished by forfeiture of liberty or life. This priucipal runs all through tbe econ omy of divine government. o man obeys God commands lor naught, nor can any man trample npon His laws with Impunity. Sod cannot tali to reward witnout contradicting Himself aud abrogat- ng every promise that lie has made: nor can God connive at ain and let disobedience go unpuuished ithout destroying His moral gov ernment A Frightened Horse, Runuing like mad down tbe street dumping the occupants, or a hundred other accidents, are every dav occurrences.
