C. The Ethics o4 Time. The commowst excuse for I rmtit evprv omitted dutv is. "I didn't have time." And on the other hand we frwwently hear it i said. "Y have all the time there is." which is true. The former statement is not often true. It is used because it sounds plaus ible; it is not used by those w ho are careful either in the use of 'words or who value the exact truth. There is an ethical element in time. Ethics is the science of duty. It has to do w ith everything that concerns us as moral aenu. Everything we do is done in two elements: time and space. In so far. then, as we are concerned with time it has no ethical sig nificance. All must accept this. It needs no proof. It is not enough to say with Bulwer Lytton that 'Time is money." That is also true many times. But it is only a commer cial view, n e are very apt to think or eternity as sacred, oe cause, I suppose, we also think of (rod at about the same time. But time is no less sacred. God has just as much to do with time as with eternity. Eternity is but time grown large beyond our comprehension. 'Time is eternity, Pregnant with all eternity can give." The easiest way to appreciate the ethical value of time is to be gin by practicing the business mans motto. l)o it now. Promptness is a virtue. Many things might as well not be done at all as not done promptly, at the right time. We say much alwut opportunity, but we forget that it is the time element which makes opportunity so critical. Certain social functions laugh at punctuality and many who be come immoral, so far as the use of time goes, at their social func tions, are no better when they go to church or to a lecture, where they either make God wait or disturb those who are really moral in their use of time. Time and tide never wait is, of course, a trite saying. But what of that which, by all the laws of morals, we ought to do before these forcos of nature have car ried us to a point where we can not any longer do them! Think of trying to run a railroad with out punctuality and exactness! The ethical element of time re minds us also of appointed times engagements. Unless an en gagement is kept by both parties to it, one robs the other of some time, and thereby, it may be, keeps him from some other duty as well. Any waste is wrong, and time is no exception. And there is a penalty for this waste of time it is in the weakening of character. For we all show what we are by the way we use time; that is, whether we recog nize its ethical element or not.
