Welah. unskilled doctors, Mr. W.J. Pratt brings iu the following dipping, from the New York Sun, showing how nature gives animals instincts to provide for themselves: While medical science has excit ed the wonder of mankind by ita rapid l rules, very little attention has heeu given to the study of the art of healing cm ployed by dumb animals, which Umiu investigation apeark to lie as wonderful as that of man himself. Some discussion of thia subject has been indulged iu at the Johns Hopkins I'niver sity lately, and it has been sug gested that the lessons teamed from the brute kingdom may iu some instances be profitable to human kind if the principles exhibited are accepted and followed. It is lielieved that the dog has a valuable secret for man iu the treat inent of wounds with its saliva. It ia stated that the saliva of a dog has a iM-rfect bactericidal and heal ing power, and there is little doubt 111 the minds of thoe who are now- delving into the subject that this same agency is a good antiseptic. Proof is upparent iu the prompt use of saliva upou his wounds by the dog and ltd sieedy recovery inroiigli tins treatment, it was a matter of comment when this mat ter was first mulct taken at the Hop kins medical school that no bade riologist had taken the hint from the dog a lesson and engaged in ex pcriiiieut along this line. That the dog ixMacasrs a marked surgical instinct is venhed by many instances out of the common place. A Mr. Young, who wits en gaged for a long time iu missionary work in northwestern t auada, had among his (logs, of which a large niiinlier were necessary fordmwiug his sleds, one Hover. This dog not only attended ita own wounds but actually sTfoi ineil the duties of surgeon to all ol Its fellows. lialls, wounds, froen feet and other like injuries coiisciiient Uhiii the peculiar toil they bad to per form were systematically and suc cessfully treated by Dr. Itover. I he dog had one remedy, the anointing of the alllictod part with saliva. Wherever it applied Jtlie remedy the cure wits ss'ily. It wits noticed that parts of the toes or the dog patients which could not be reached by the dog doctor's tongue went unhealed. The Itev. Mr. Young says that the Indians in admiration or the dog's wonderful learning called it Mus keke Atim, meaning the surgeon. 1 he dog is not alone iu the pos session of this means for curing the various ills to which its tribe is heir. Cuts, rattle, rats, mice and monkeys uie all known to lick their wounds when they can get at them, and when they cannot do so they endeavor to get their companions to iMTfonu this ollice for them. If the poor little worlds which they know were possessed of news papers Intelligible to them it would doubtless be true that they would tie freiiient contributors to those columns devoted to home remedies and they would tell in glowing and convincing language how they had tried this method with such suc cess that they would have no other. The Johns Hopkins men who are iuiiiiriiig into this subject now call attention to an incident narrated by Dr. James Weir in which a large monkey figured. The monkey scratched his shoul der latdly on a nail which project ed from the side or its cage. Im mediately upon sustaining the in jury the ipieer creature went to a corner and selected a handful of clean sawdust, which it pressed firmly on the profusely bleeding scratch. The monkey held the sawdust iu place until the bleeding Ntopied, which was in but a few minutes. The sawdust was saturated with bhssl, which had dried and formed au excellent coating for (he wound, protecting it until entirely well. It should be mentioned that the dog'a medical instinct dts-s not halt at the saliva treatment. It is a physician as well as a surgeon. The dog that goes searching around in a field with apparent aiiulessness and finally settles down to chew up some unattractive and unpalatable greens is taking a prescription taught it hy nature. The blades) it eats are those of the couch grass which your physician would prob ably designate ou his prescript ion blank aa Triticuni repens, and it perform the offices of a pmgative. Instances could lie recited at length of animal display of the medical instinct. L'udersuch circumstance cats have heeu k nown to travel mile to get the catnip. Not the least remarkable of all the achievements of dumb erf at u res in the line of surgery and nied iciue are thisas of the birds. Dr. tieorge M. (Jould rites instance of wisslciM'k killed which when el aiuined were fouud to lie recover iug from previous wounds indicted by hunters. Such wounds made by small shot 111 the Issly of the bird were neatly- dressed with down plucked from the stems of leathers aud deftly ar Ringed about the iujured place. This work was evideutly done ith the beak of the bird. The skill of iueiiilk?rsof the featb ered tribe in building their dainty uosts is testimony to their ability iu accomplishing work oflhis char acter with neatness aud despatch. Of the success of this work Dr. (ionic! Wars witness ill the state ment that the woodcock were found to Is" couvalrsceut from the old wounds. The same authority tells of cases of hone setting by birds which would be tieyond belief if man waa not already familiar with the mar vellous intelligence of the lower creatures. liirds which have fallen into the hands of naturalists and which had previously suffered seri ous wouuds ou the legs were fouud to have actually re-enforced the dressing or dowu with small straws or twigs just as a dia'tor would set a broken limb iu splints before ap plying oandagea. lo this same fact M. Tat 10, a naturalist, bears witness, and his statements are borne out by no less a celebrity than Fulbcrt Duuionteil. Tatio says that no less than ten times in his exiericnce he has found birds whose limbs hud pre viously Wn broken by shot aud the fractured ends had been neatly approximated and ligatured togeth er. He adds that the skill die- played in this performance would have done credit to human medical silence. The bee, that wonderful little creature the organization of who community must always beasourct 1 admiration, is among ollici things an excellent doctor and goes about its work in this particular with the shame scrupulous care that it exercises iu all elm that it docs.
