Iney, have had two busy days thisweek, and are not yet through hard work. The disiensr and the treasurer weresellled with, the tax levy luid, and a jury will be drawn at thifi meeting. In the levying of the tax, the commissioners were up against a tough proposition. The law now coi-ijicls them to levy 4 cents more than heretofore to run the schools of the county four months. Add to Hi in, the Supreme Court has just said that the poll tax can under no circumstances be more than t'i for all pnrposes. Last year the total poll tax in Mouroe towuship was l'J.03, and in the other towusbips 2.57. With this cut to 2, there is a considerable loss. , This loss, added to tho new tax of 4 cents for schools, apiiearcd to make it neces sary to increase the rt.te on prop erty. But the commissioners de cided to retain the rate of last year, (17 2 3 cento per f 100 in Monroe township, and 85 2 3 In the other townships. They will endeavor to make good the difference by being as economical as possible. So taxes, to the man who pays poll, wil! ac tually be a little loss this year than last. Democratic Primary and Canvas. At the meeting of the Democratic executive committee last Thursday, the date for the primary for coun ty officers was set for August 15th.
