cause on a lighter at a Jersey City
pier Wednesday. The vessel and

Estimates of the dead reach 40 or

Skyscrapers in New York rocked,
ferryboats were almost blown over,
thousands of windows smashed, and
panic seized the crowds in many!
places. Many believed an earth
quake had occurred. The property
damage is estimated at millions.

"St. Elmo" will visit Monroe on
Monday, Feb. 13th.
There is no play which has enjoy-1
ed the instantaneous success that St
Elmo has, principally because of the :
immense popularity of the book.!
Every reader ol notion js iarauiar
with the story of Augusta Evans
remarkable book.
In the play all the characters and
the plot are brought out more forci
bly. Just as in the book, St. Elmo
Murray is represented as that gloomy
pessimistic man, whose faith in wo
men has been destroyed by tha
treachery of one in whom he former
ly placed his trusL The transform
ation of his character from an erst
while evil aspwt to one that is no
ble and admirable, caused through
his love for Edna Earl, is most dra
matically depicted in the play.

A MEDIAEVAL NAVY.
Qur Implements of Attack and D
fru That Wr Uui
Very strange to modern eyes
would be the armament of Great
Britain's mediaeval navy. The very
name of many of the implements
of attack and defense sound queer.
According to the books, in the year
1337 the vessels of the navy were
furnished with "esprinpilds," an
cient spring guns; "haubergeons,"
coats of mail; "bacineU," small
helmet; bow, arrows, doublets,
targets; "pnvi.-c," large shields
placed at the sides and mng the
double purpose of protection against
the sea and against the enemy;
lances and "firing barrels." As
early as 1333 cannon formed part
of the armament of ships, and about
1372 guns and t gunpowder were
common! used. Anions: the stores
belonging to one vessel of that time J
were three iron cannon ith live
chamWrs, a hand gun and three old
stone bags, probably for shot. An
other ship had an iron cannon with
two chambers and one brass cannon
with ono chamber. .
Among other implements of war
used at that time were "cannon pa-
Tiors," o stone shot throwers, and
'murtherers. which were smaller
and threw any kind of shot. There
were also "basilisks," "port pieces,"
"stock fowlers," "sakers" and
"bombard." The bombards were of
hammered iron, made of bart weld
ed and bound together with iron
bands. They threw stone shot
weighing between 140 pounds and
195 pounds. A battery ol these
erected on a slip of land at the
naval battle of Chioggia (13S0) be
tween the Venetians and the Geno
ese did great damage. They were
loaded overnight and were tired in
the morning.
Froissrt tells of k bombard used
at ou of these ancient sioges that
"might I heard five leagnes off in
the daytime and ten at night. Tha
report of it was so loud that it
seemed as if all the devils ia hell
had broken loose." Brasa ordnance
was Irst cast in England in 1535.
The pieces had various names.
Many of different caliber were
mounted on the samt deck, which
must have, caused great confusion in
action in finding for each iU proper
shot. St. James' Gazette.
