MANUEL NEAR A DIVORCE?
A Paris dispatch uyi that al
though the repeated ramort of a di
vorce between the deposed King Man
uel of Portugal and his German
princes lack confirmation, friends of
the family In Tarts ajr that their af
fairs have reached an acute stage.
Manuel and his wife hare never un
derstood each other, and In spite of
praiseworthy effort on the part of
both to arrive at an honorable ar
rangement of their life, tbey never
have succeeded in bridging the gulf
which opened between them imme
diately after their marriage.
The marriage was an Idyll. Queen
Amel!a looked upon the daughter of
her old friend, the prince of Hohcnloho
Sismaringen, as the ideal wife for her
son, possessing all those qualities
which were lacking in his character.
The little princess had a will of her
own, and was not devoid of ambition.
Might she not be the means of brine
lnc Manuel back to the throne Such
a role, however, demanded, first of all, experience, and In this the princess
was totally larking.
She found that Manuel was a careless, easy-going, almost irresponsible
yontb. Irresolute, but yet capable of sudden and unforeeeen obstinacy. He
on hie Fide saw in her a narrow-minded authoritative young person, with
Ideas which appeared to him out-of-date and provincial a passion for house
keeping and other domestic virtues which fell in neither with his tastes nor
his requirements. I'nder these circumstances a quarrel was Inevitable.
Quen Amelia and the intimates of the two families are doing their beet
to smooth away the differences between the young couple, but they are not
optimistic.
John Vann For the Legislator.
Whereas, during the coming elec
tion a number of amendments to the
Constitution of the State of North
Carolina will be submitted to the vote
of the people, and. whereas, it will
become the duty of the nominees of
the party to explain from the stump
to the people the meaning of said
amendments and their purport, and
whereas. If theee amendments are
adopted by the people, as it now
seems evident they will be, the next
Legislature will be one of the most
important In the history of this State
and will involve the construction of
more constitutional questions than
any Legislature that has met in this
State since IS 68; now, therefore, we
believe that It is important to the
State of North. Carolina that Union
county should furnish to the House
of Representatives one person who
has had sufficient menial training
and is sofficiently versed in the con
struction to be placed on said amend
ments as to render valuable assist
ance in the next General Assembly.
We further believe that with the
adoption of said amendments the
making of private laws will be placed
in the hands of the County Commis
sioners or other governing board, and
that only matters of state-wide im
portance will be considered by the
General Assemblies hereafter conven
ed. For the above reasons, and on ac
count of his ability and service to
the party, we present for the consid
eration of the Democratic voters in
the primary the name of John Vann
as a suiatble and fit man to represent
this county in the House of Represen
tatives. DEMOCRATS.
COPIES UNITED STATES STYLES FOR HOME
King Christian of Denmark has
decided that the newest cf his numer
ous residences shall be furnished In
American style in every detail. The
style be has selected to copy is that
of the simple and efficient equipment
of the average American home. He
has long been an admirer of the
American arts and conveniences of
home-making and he has Insisted that
his newest bouse, which la situated
on the Skaw, will lack none of them.
The excuse for so many resi
dences as King Christian has In so
small a country as Denmark is his
fondness of keeping in touch with his
people, which, he maintains, he can
not do better than by living every
where. The king maintains an elaborate
entourage, but It is only for the en
tertainment of visiting sovereigns and
diplomats. At for himself he lives In
the most simple manner. No ruler
In Europe Is more easily accessible.
Recently on a visit to Naskov the king was attracted by a delicious apple
pie displayed In a shop window. He went inside to buy a piece and while
there bought some cake for a small boy In the shop. Later the shop woman
learned the Identity of her royal customer and she promptly hung out a sign
announcing that her shop purveyed to the royal family of Denmark.

HINDU POTENTATE TO VISIT AMERICA
It is not at all unlikely that the
Maharajah of Kapurthala will be
among tlw distinguished foreigners
who will visit America next year to
attend the Panama exposition, so says
recent gossip in Paris, whore this
magnificent "prinee of prlnoea" Is as
well known a figure In the luxurious
set as Andre Fouquleres himself. Both
are exquisites and it was the Parisian
arbiter who went to India three years
ago, on the occasion of the wedding
of the eldest son of the Maharajah, to
lead and arrange the cotillion; for, as
an International chronicler on good
taste declares, "no ballroom In Prance
la considered complete without the
presence of M. Fouquleres," and ths
Maharajah, who made this occasion
like a dream of the Arabian Nights,
really had Paris transported to Kapur
thala It will not be the first visit of
the Maharajah to this side of the At
lantic. He was the rage at Newport '
twenty years ago, when he was the guest of Mrs. 0. H. P. Belmont and other
powerful social leaders. He was unquestionably the fashion. Polished, and
with the poise and cleverness of the Ideal man of the world, he made a most
agreeable Impression Indeed, soma of the women who recall the graces of
the young Hindu potentate decisis he was "simply fascinating."
