The number of slu-t in the 3ti Tarui elates, which do not include any in the Western division, could be in creased only by 15 per cut. it is estimated, without displacitiB other live stock. Some authorities believe that the increase could be even as much as '.' percent without serious jn'erfereliee with the number of other annuals. An increase of K per cent in these " States would mean in money $ M t.2ii7.to. In u new pub lication of the Department of Agricul ture. Fanners" Bulletin the re sponsibility Tor the loss to the coun trr is laid upon the sheep-killini; dot,'- . Sheep - killins dos. it is said, are the principal cause of the marked de crease in the number of sheep on American farms. In the l' years be tween HMMl and l!10 the number of sheep in the country, exclusive of the Slates in the Western division, de creased S.Oort.rtrirt head in face of the fact that' durins these same, years the market value of sheep rose so rap idly that the total value of sheep in this vear was J l.mH.miO. or ap proximately per cent more in lf.l'i than in l!"1"- Favorable thoimh the market conditions were, thev were not a sufrtcient incentive to induce farmers to risk the heavy losses from stray dogs. The number of sheep killed annual ly by dogs cannot be stated exactly, since there are many cases which are not reported at all. Judging from the figures in these counties and States in which reasonably complete reports are obtainable however, it mav be said that in the "H farm States more than 1'"'. sheep are killed each year by dogs. This, is true, in less than one per cent of the total number of sheep in this area, but a one per cent loss on a business that is being conducted on a profit basis of a or per cent, can not be ignored. This estimate, it must be remembered, is also proba ble much lower than the actual fig ures. It is certain, too. that many men have been kept out of the sheep businss through fear that in their own particular cases the loss would be much more than one per cent. Anv one who has actually seen sheep kilied. injured or frightened by dogs is likelv to think twice before engag ing in the business. In many cases Willi only one or two sheep may be actually bitten by the dogs, the wl,..V Hock is chased until it dies lroin exhaustion. If the dog iiestion could be sat isfactorily disposed of there seems to be no reason why the number of sheep in the country could not be in creased to the extent already indicat ed In Creat llritain there is one Phep or lamb for each acres of the total area. In the 3fi farm states in this country there Is one sheep or lamb for each "1.8 Bcr.es. The l!ri ti'h farmer handles his land on an intensive basis and feeds his sheep on forage crop pastures. Such pas tures not onlv increase the fertility of .lie land but also free the sheep from many internal parasites contracted through grazing upon permanent pas tures. In particular the use of a suc cession of I'orage-crop pastures will rirevent stomach worms, one or the V.ost prevalent and disastrous scourg es of young stock, and will en title the farmer to market by the end of .tune or the first or July, wben .....bin iriei ire usually the high est, the lambs that were born in the ! :e winter or early spring, namuet ' ..t.. ..... i, ,.ml it inns mid on higll- .1 Uli-l sin II ' p-ioed farm land the Importance of i. mall Mod; of sheep cannot tie over looked. Tnder this plan all dogs over six mouths of age must be licensed each year, the tax paid at the time of licensing and a metal tas bearing the li.ense number attached to the dogs collar. Any dog found without this tag unattend ed and oft its owners premises may be killed. When found unattended on a farm where sheep are kept the dog may be killed whether it lias the tag or not. and under any circum stances a dog caught chasing or kill ing sheep may be killed. All Jtcs which can be proved to le sheep kil lers must he killed whether cauchi in th act or not. and a reward of 15 should be ollered for any one idemi fving a sheep-killing dog. The money received from dog taxes should be devoted to reimbursing sheep ow ners for their lost stock and the county should in turn convey this nionev whenever possible from the dog"s owners.
