On Thursday morning there was a recitation and declaime tion contest by the adv&nei d classes Tno medal for the best recitation was won by Miss Kate Crowell and the clainier s medal was von by Mr Samuel Lemmond. I will state right here that Mr. Lemmond also won the medal in the county commencement in Monroe Saturday. Thursday even ing the annual literary address was delivered by Mr. David Ovens, preBl dent of the Chamber of Commerce of Charlotte. Thursday night a play was given, entlttled, "A Kentucky Belle." This wa3 attended by the largest crowd during the entire ex orrises. First-class music was ren dered by the Icemorlee band Thurs- dav and Thursday night. The farmers of this tectlon are very busy preparing the land for planting. Very little planting has been done yet on account of the re cent rains. Miss Panthea Harkey of Charlotte rpent a few days lact week with rela tivf3 and friends here. Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Kendall ppent Thursday evening In Monroe on busi ness. Miss Daisy Vanderburg of Char Intte Is spending the week with her sister, Mrs. D. L. Deese, of this place. Mr. Tom Kendall of Albemarle spent a few days last week with rcla tivs and friends here. Miss Clara Belle Poyd of near Ran ford spent last week with relatives and friends In this community. Our little town was thronged with visitors last week but I haven't time to write them up. Gilbert.
