She ran with glee up the broad hall
way. Her sweet voice called for me to
look.
And she tiptoed, and hung above,
A clover chain, on a picture hook.
"Cranee. mother says to 'come right
home."
This with a pout, and earnest
frown
"Don't let Grandpa, nor uncle Tom,
Ever dare to pull my clover chafti
down."
I smiled at her over my glasses.
fo very funnv it did sound!
That she had thought these teasinc
men
Would ever take time to pull it down.
"I'll hang it right here, see? You
don t care.
Craiife listen to what I sav: i
I tied the chain all by myself.
I'll come and 'et it soi-io other
day."
Now the clover blooms have come
again.
The joyous birds Bine In the trees
Roses are swaying everywhere
And lilies sweet are luring the bees.
But the clover chain Is dry and crisp.
Ana my bitter tears fall like rain:
The little hands are white and still.
ihe dear hands that tied the clov
er chain.
Loving Grandpa, and dear uncle Tom,
with love and reverence that fe
profound.
Hold as sacred the child's com
mand
Neither would ever dare take It down.
I hear other childish voices clear,
.Midst laughter sweet, and Joy, o
Ray.
I long to hear the voice that said,
I ll come and get it some other
day."
Oh! oft I stand, and caress this chain.
And view the knots that once she
tied; . I
And sob. and sob, to think she's
gone
No more she'll prattle by Granee's
side.

At a meeting of the Board of j Superintendent
Aldermen Wednesday night reports
from the various departments were,
listened to and the possibilities of se
curing an adequate water supply fo'
the city was discussed. In other years
the city has obtained considerable
water from the well of the Monroe
Ice and Fuel company at the Ice
plant. For some reason this well is
already beginning to fall this year,
it was stated. However, It Is the
opinion of some that this is due to
the Improper working of the pumps.
In an effort to determine this a pipe
line will be run from the city's pump
station to the well at the plant and
the air lift system employed to raise
the water. It was decided by the
aldermen that attempts should be
made to secure a government expert
to come to Monroe and make a sur
vey to determine If an adequate sup
ply of water can be secured by boring
a well at any point In the city or near
It. Mr. C. W. Lee, city engineer, was
yesterday engaged In connecting a
well, which has not been used recent
ly, on the city's lot with air pumps.
Some water may be secured from this
source. The aldermen met again last
night to arrange special taxes and to
prepare a budget.
