We are wrry to learn that there
will be no community Christmas tree
this year. The Initial effort last year
proved so successful and popular that
we are sure there will be genuine re
gret throughout the city as welTa

expectant, wondering little ones, i

However, we must bow to the force
Of circumstances. Time are hard
this year In a cotton country. Our)
children for the most part, thanks,

absolutely need the community tree;

coived. The parents of practically all j
of them can afford to open the house !

Christmas. The big public tree is
fine, beautiful; but it's a luxury; it's
a delight to thei public heart, but It's
extra. And we suppose this Is no
time for extras, niore's the pity.

told by those who had It in hand that

gladdened with gifts of good things,
substantial necessaries.
Just as it's a poor rule that won't
work both ways, so it's a poor reason
that won't do double duty. If hard
times Is a good reason for omitting
I the community tree, it's a better rea
son for helping tho destitute. By
nil rights there should be more this
year than Ink.
