'Flashes of Action"' Real War Picture to Be Shown at Strand Special Notices One cent a m ord each insertion. List-Takers Appointments. I wwmvwwxvumwwNwnxwwxuu vy Union county people mill have the opportunity to etc pictures of real fighting during the World War in tin war department film. "Flaijhoa of Ac tion," to be shown here at the St 'and Theater on Thursday, May 19, both afternoon and night, under the aus pice of the local post of the American Legion. Real fighting on sea. ii the air, and on the land is shown, aci-or.l-ing to the following statement Issue 1 by Mr. Olin McManus, adjutant of th Milvin Deese post: "During the period that the Ameri can armies were in France, many thousand feet of motion pictures wvie taken by the phot ogra pliers of ihe signal corps of the 1'nited Stages army. The war dep.: Jiient at Wash ington has compilt :ve thousand feet of the best scenes of action into a picture tinder the title "Flashes of Action' constituting a show lasting one and a half hours. Thru arrange ments with the war department these pictures are "being shown !y the American Legion posts under the di rection of a lieutenant from the I'nited Stales army. Melvin Deese post No. 27, of the American Legion has secured pictures for one day only to be shown at the Strand Theater on Thursday, 19th, afternoon and night. These pictures are recom mended very highly by the war de partment and much more so by thos-? who have seen them on the screen. They have Just been shown in the surrounding towns and cities of Nort i Carolina and South Carolina and this post Is very fortunate In getting them shown In Monroe. "The fact that these pictures ar? scenes of the actual fighting, on land, on sea. and in air, makes it move important that a person should know about them. One of the most thi fil ing and spectacular scents shows i?4e air squadron lead by Lieut. Queottn Roosevelt flying in formation to ij gage In battle with a German squad ron, and dropping bombs on the both lines. Captain Eddie Plckenbackvr. America's "Ace of Aces" Is seen U looking for an enemy plane ani in this plane you find the camera man who takes the pictures. Hundreds of these photographers were killed while risking their lives in this way to pet these tnap shots such as are going to be shown at the Strand. Such collodions as artillery bombardments, .tulal battle, gas attacks. Infantry ad vcucine on the enemy, and also nitht action with the picture made by the flash s from the big gun, and the search liehts pointing out the enemy's wire e ntanglement as well as a view from an woplane showing how the liimlini: fields were designated with signal rockets, is shown. Railroad guns behind the lines, the big howit zers, the famous French 75"s operated ly the Americans and also the big naval guns in liuplacements are very interesting. '"Remember these pictures are scenes of actual fighting taken by the United States signal corps and shown through the war department. They come here highly recommended by both the war departments and those who have seen them on the screen. It is a picture that is well worth seeing. Any red-blooded American must thrill with pride to see our troops in action In the shell swept areas of France and later In the 'Watch on the Rhine.' "The film will be shown at the Strand Theater on Thursday. 19th. and the proceeds from the same will go toward the helping of our disabled ex-service men throughout Union county.. And others sweet and sunny souls; Who chirp advice to farmers." j The condition of the cotton market reminds me: "How's your cold, Don ald?" "Verra obstinate." "And how's your wife?" "About the same." 'Keep on' humming, although the skies are gray. Keep on humming till troubles flies away Bright days are coming, sunshine and cheer. Just keep on humming, sadness will disappear. Keep on humming, the world will smile at you, Sunbeams your love-dreams will be- Just hum a song ns you travel aolng, Keep right on humming with me." The wind Is tempered to shorn the lamb The farmers are again criticised, saying the all-cotton, one-crop farm ing system In the South has kept mil lions of white men in the worst sort of economic peonage for decades. Urging the raising by Southern farm ers: "Less cotton and more cows." Speaking of cows, reminds me: A irginian. seening election to oi - , , ( . gress. was traveling with a friend. ,. be rorKoUtM, who introduced him to many or tne Tn f MM ,he , Uo1 voters.
