Society strikes hands with the
dog, even the mangy cur, if it
can but attract the atientioi) of
the world to its eccentric doings.
Society does not know the
meaning of the word charity,
only to exercise it as methods of
advertising its frivolity.
A case has been thrown out of court
in Chicago because one word in the
indictment was incorrectly spelled.
And yet there are lots of people who
wonder why travels with a
leaden heel and so frequently strikes
with a velvet hand in this country.—
Va. Pilot.
And this is what makes of a
law a misreable fraud, not an
instrument of justice, but a
machine fcr sharp and unscru-
pelous lawyer to defeat justice.
It is intimated that the friends
of Ex-Governor Glenn will have
a talk with Mr. Woodrow Wilson
relative to a place in his cabinet
for him. We hardly think it
will be w^orth while, Mr. Glenn
may be provided for in some
way, but not likely in that way.
North Carolina will be looked
after, but the way in which she
will be looked after will hardly
iaclade places for all of those in
North Carolina who may seek
them.
It seems that the Turks were
drilled and taught their military
tacties by German officers, and
the Turks have literaly and
completely failed- The men of
the Balkan States were drilled
and taught their tactics, and
furnished their heavy artilery
by the French, and they have
succeeded, succeeded beyond
their wildest dreams, What these
things have had to do with the
war, we do not know, but we are
glad it is so.
The dynamite conspiracy now
being uncovered by the govern
ment at Indianapolis is appalling
in its recital. Further details
of the part the McNamars played
in olowing up the Los-Angeles
Times building in which 21 lives
were lost has been added to tliis
horror, and it does seem that the
Government will be able to get
to the bottom of it.
Frank Ryan Paesident of
International Association of
Standard Bridge and Iron Works,
is on trial with forty other men.
It is to be hoped that every
one who in any way was interes>
ted in this great dynamite
conspiracy may be convicted and
duly punished. It^s a pity but
what electrocution could not come
in as one of the methods of
punishments.
A BIG TOBACCO MARKET.
We said it three years ago,
we repeat it to day, that with
proper and contineous effort
Mebane may be made one of the
biggest tobbacco markets in the
State. So far it’s growth has
been phenominal. It has already
outstriped a number of towns
much larger. As we have before
stated Geographicaly Mebane
occupies and ideal position.
There is one thing that should
be done, and that at once, that
is to encourage the cultivation
of tobacco South of Mebane.
There is much land adapted to
the cultivation of tobacco upon,
which profitable crops may bej
made, why not? W^e should be
glad to see this matter taken
hold of lin real earnest. There
is no tnuble to get in touch with
the farmer if you try. No one
appreciates a friend better than
he does.
Let us all pull for Mebane as a
big tobacco market, then watch
the gratifying results. ]
When Japan conquered China
in 1895, held as one of the con
ations of a settlement that
Japan should have Port Arthur.
The ink was hardly dry upon
the treaty before Russia politely
but firmly informed Japan that
she could not have Port Arthur,
nor did she get it until she had
b/avely conquered it back from
the Russions in 1904.
Just such cowardly tacties as
Russia played has been played
by a number of nations. The
most recent to threaten it, is
Austria. She proposes to stick
her mouth in the treaty that
Bulguria will make with the
Turks in her peace settlement.
WANTED TEMPTATION.
Mr. R. Tj. Doughton of Ale-
ghany Co., it seems will be
returned to the Legislature, Mr,
Doashton served in the last
Legislature and when the
question came up through a bill
from Mr. Wooten of Lenoir
prohibiting paid lobbyist to
appear upon the floor of the
House, or Senate, Mr. Doughton
bitterly opposed the bill giving
as his reason he found that to
favor such a bill would give the
public the impression that the
members of the Legislature was
so weak they feared to be
approached, that they might
fall. The bill was defeated, and
a great many people believed
that largely the reason for its
defeat was that there was
members who wanted to live in
an atmosphere of temptation,
and this bill would put it out of
their reach.
The day is past when you
would make much headway
hunting up characters like Poti-
phers wife in a North Carolina
Le^lature. Everything may be
as straight as a gun barrell, but
it does not all ways look that
way. How about E. M. Koonces
bill to have a little investigation
in the insurance business? Who
killed it? Don^t ask all at one e.
THE BIG GUNS.
It is the big guns that is doing
^he good work for the Bulcrarians
in driving Turkey back to Asia. ^
The big guns have made for
them selves creditable history.
It was the big guns that
battered to pieces the coalitions
that was formed by combined
Europe against Napolean. The
big guns help to make of Aus-
trelitz the crowning glory of
Napohans military career. It
was the worlds famous Von-
Mohke of Germany, with his
cresant half circle of big guns
around Sedan playing its fringe
of fire and iron, that drove the
French frantic, and at last
wrung from them that coveted
teritory Alsace-and Lorrain,
It was the big guns at the!
battle of Mukden in Manchura in |
the Russian and Japanees war, j
the bloodiest battle ever fought
in the worlds history in which ’
one hundred and seventy five'
thousand men were killed. Eight |
hundred thousand were in battle. |
The Japanese drove the Russians
beyond Tie-Pass, and opened a
way for peace negotiationp,
which ended successfuly at
Ports Mouth, N. H.
The big guns will do their
good work at Adrianople and
Tchalja, and the Insufferable
l\irk will be driven to the plains
of Asia.
