The death of Nelson P. Al
drich of Rhode Island removes a
once ver.v conspicious figure
from American politics, a man of
large brain, and powerful in
fluence. Mr. Aldrich for a
while prior to retiring from the
senate of the United States large
ly dominated that body.Butit was
Mr Aldrich that struck his party
its death blow. The party under
Mr. Tafts administration had
been returned to power upon a
pledge to reduce the tariff, Mr.
Aldrich backed by the high tariff! ernment supervision, to be
good sense expects war a play
thing, a kind of enterchange of
deplomatic courtesies, and the
amenites of life. People who
think know that 1b like Sher
man said it was, it is hell, but
the Ctimans have sought, ai.d
found a deeper, a darker, a more
luried hell, a more damnable
hell. A hell so infamous, so
cruel, that satan could not find
its counterpart by searching the
archives of the infernal abode of
the damned. No one ever
dreamed that on earth there
^ ever dwelt a people so lost to
I every instinct of humanity as
I the Germans are proving them
I selves to be. They are not only
‘j cruel and brutal, but they are
proving to be the most consum-
ate liars on earth, and many of
those who undertake to defend
them lie to do so. it is the only
way they can defend them.
Germany began her infamous
piratical and murderous warfare
on the high seas by offering as her
excuse for it that England was
about to starve her civic popul-

The great hurrah now being
kicked up because of the- stop
ping of so manv cotton mills
due primarily to the imposibility
of securing German dyes, is a
fault of the American people be
cause they would not equip them
selves to make the dyes, for
sooth because this government
did by a prohibitory’^ tariff en
able them to -acquire a large
percent in their manufactures.
We have raised cane over here
asserting we wanted a high
tariff to protect our labor from
the products of tli-- ciieap labor
of Europe. Now labor defiantly
demands its share- and some
times more thnn its share of the
results of tl is benificent tariff.
The sudden and unexpected
death of Col. A B Andrews at
Raleigh Saturday !tight last was
and event of unusual sadness
It has cast a shadow ot sorrow
and regret over the entire State
and far beyond its borders, for
he was well and favorable known
over the entire Eastern slope.
His death becomes a distinctive
loss to a large numl^er of busi
ness associates, and in fact all
who have had entercourse with
him whether in his official capa
city or upon friendly relations.
He has been a power lor good in
North Carolina, and
finds that Germany, while hus
banding its food, IS in no danger
of starvation; that it has sup
plies for at lea^t one year
and that the promise of big crops
this season is excellent. He also
heard in Germany itself that the
bread cry was raised in order to
compel neutrals to hasten to the
relief of the empire,
And there you get Germanys
game in a nut shell. If England
who has a very superior navy
had announced to the world that
she would send every one of
her battleships to some port and
then keep them there until the
war ended then perhaps,and only
perhaps Germany, might not
have 30 thoroughly mined the
high seas, or sought with her
submarines to make war upon
helpless merchantman, and sink
ing tiiern, some times with a
load of inocent human freight,
at least maliceously destroying
all the property they could find
undefended on land and on sea.
Germany is the scourge of
hell, the sirocco from the blast
of the furnaces of perdit^ion, the
most infamous power existing.
This fact will be proven be
fore the war is ended.
Changing a Name’s Spelling.
Many have changed theii names of
late, but no surname probably has un
dergone so many alterations as that
of Sir Harry Stapleton Mainwaring.
At Peover hall, his Cheshire home,
there is a record showing the differ
ent ways In which the name has been
spelled in the course of the centuries.
They uumbei- 394, says the London
Chronicle. Shakespeare can beat the
394 different ways of spelling Main-
waring, and quite easily, too. In 1869
a diligent American published a vol
ume showing that the poet’s name
could be spelled in 4,000 different ways.
And the name of his father actually
appears under 16 different spellings
in the council books of Stratford, and
Shakespeare himself had no settled
convictions on the subject.
