THE MORGANTON STAR. T. G. Oobb, Editor and Prop'r. 2s. A. COBB, .Business Manager. FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 1880. Entered at the Post-office at Morganton as second class matter. THE ROANOKE MEETING. Roanoke City is so recently start ed that it may be necessary to tell your readers where it is. A little East of North from Morganton and about 120 miles distant, in an air line, about where, in ye olden times, was called Big Lick, in the Valley of Virginia, is now the young City. Four years ago the first house was erected. To-day there is a population of over six thousand souls, and growing like Jonah's gourd. The landscape is beautiful and the improvements are of the best character. The people are enterprising, industrious aud thrif ty. Shops, foundrys, forges, &c, employing over seven hundred of the "horney handed sons of toil" keeps up the "hum" of busy life from morn 'till eve. They have built a first-class Railroad from Hagerstown Maryland, up the Shenandoah Valley to Roanoke, where it intersects with the Nor folk & Western, leading from Nor folk via Lynchburg to Bristol. The purpose of the meeting was to take steps to extend their Valley road South, either toward Charles ton, S. C, or Atlanta, Geo. Knowing that Ashe, Wautauga, Caldwell, Burke, Cleveland and Rutherford covered the air line and knowing there was a practicable route direct through the Mountains, I determined to attend the meet ing and direct their attention to the Air-line, with assurance that our people, tho' not forward in such matters, were fully alive to the importance (to them) of their project, and solicitous that the Company should seek its outlet through our part of North Carolina. When I reached Eoanoke City and found large delegations from Greenville, Spartanburg, Union, and Lancaster, S. C. and from Charlotte, Lincoln, Mooresville, Mocksville,- Winston-Salem and Rockingham Co., N. C, offering large subscriptions and other in ducements to secure the line by their places, I felt keenly how slow our people had been, and what an "up hill" work was before me. Korth Carolina has long been pro verbial for ultra conservatism, if aot sloth, and Burke is very North Carolinian. Lordl when will we wake up f Well, the meeting was called to order, at noon, in a skating rink capable of holding two thousand people and it was well nigh full ! 8peeches were made by members of all the delegations, and the ut most enthusiasm was displayed. The road is going to he built, but on what route, is dependent upon the relative cost of different lines and local 'Inducements offered. Char lotte offers two hundred thousand dollars. Iredell Co. offers three hundred thousand dollars, if it comes by Statesville. Forsythe county will grade the road thfo' the county, if located by Winston 3alem. What would Burke do? What is it going to do about the Cranberry.Shelby line, which could be used, in part by the Eoanoke ! Or shall we fence up and' go to $leepJ t A Gentleman who attended the meeting from Buncombe county ays that our townsman, C ol. Tate xaade, by all odds the finest and most finished speech on that occa sion. Burke's honor and Burke's glory are ever safe in his hands. Let the hope ot that road be a owuug luwuuve to our people to bestir themselves and see that the 9 48,000 is voted on the 15th of May. Let your county pride come to the rescue and persuade your neighbor to be up and doing in be half of progress, advancement, work for the laborer and money for all. You owe it to yourselves and your children to be active and vigi lent in this very important matter. If this opportunity passes, it is gone and gone forever. The arguments nave been msde, the case is with the people and we hare an 'abulia faith that they will work together for the glory and welfare of Burke. Be earnest, active, energetic, and place old Burke on the high road ot prosperity. THE JUDGESHIP. So far we have heard no aspir ant for Judge Avery's office ; there fore we conclude that all agree that Judge Avery is the right man in the right place. Wherever he has exercised his official duties he has been complimented by the press and the people for his impartial administration of justice to all con ditions of men, irrespective of race, color, or position. Judge Avery does not rush into conclusions, but when convinced that he is right, no outside inducements can be brought to bear to cause him to shrink from dnty. This was fully demonstrated in the great temper ance issue a few years ago. He believed he was right (and so it proved) and did not hesitate to de clare his principles. So fully sat isfied are the people that he is the right man in the right place, that we believe he will be re-nominated for a second term by acclima tion. THE ASHEYILLE RUMPUS. As there are no new developments in the trouble between Mr. Eich- mond Pearson aud Gen. Johnstone Jones, we take it for granted that deneral Jones has acted as he should hae done, and has declin ed the challenge to fight a duel. General Jones' reply to Mr. Pear son's pamphlet makes eleven col umns of solid type, and the para graph which is said to have pro voked the challenge, from Mr. Pear- sou was one referring to the affair between Mr. Pearson and Hon. E. Y. McAdeu, in Ealeigh, during the session of the last Legislature. It is said that under the laws of North Carolina the sending or ac cepting of a challenge to light a duel debars the one who sends or accepts from the right to vote or to hold office. Charlotte Observer. From Fonta Flora. Fonta Flora, N. C. April 27th 1886. Editor Morganton Star : As "Short-Oil" has been ailont for sometime iu representing Linville in your columns, I take the liberty, as you want the news from each and every townships to give you a few items. Our farmers are about through planting corn. The wheat crop is looking fine, prospects at this lime, for an abundant harvest, are better than we have hud for years. Mr. C. D. Giles says he will compare wheat with any average farmer of the coun ty who throws his seed broad-cart and is not much afraid to compare with guano and drill sowers. Mr. F. C.-Furguson is making ar rangements to have his new house painted, which, when finished up will be a tine dwelling and a desirable place to live. Our Sunday School at Tmn Church has not been in as flout ishipc wmmwu unt season as usual, but we have alireasons to believe now that it will prosper as Prof. W. E." Abernethy according to mevions ni poiutmeDt made us a fine Sunday rt.ru ounuay, wttic'i greatly revived all who heard him. 1 he Prof. 's speech rerlecrtp.fi tmw.i, credit uuou himself and d good to the children of the communi ty and to the Sunday School caue. And in as much as we spp h; i,. ..,, mentioned as a suitable man for the legislature we think a better selection for that office could not be made. The Prof, is a man of extra ordinary talent, ability and influence and 1 have no doubt in my mind, but what he woald look well .-if tart h ir.,. of Old Burke. BUTILEEFOED COLLEGE, Anril 24th 188G. , 1 Editor Morganton Star : w give you the items from onr nnipt Urn , Cassionally, I will endeavor to ilo ,wuguAim.4mm a youth at the business. Great preparations are beinr made for the commencement. The young orators, in connection with the whippoorwills, are making the evening zephyrs resound with their mellow strains. The committee to purchase invi tation cards f'nr fl,Q vumuience ment are having a great deal of ti'aii Wirt ;. a. a - , .xwuo ui peering them, conse quently they will be late. Yesterday hi the Dr. gave the school a holiday m the suape of a var-d v--? j McGalliard Falls, two miles west of j the college. Though the walk was ! wearisome, the pleasures of the day banished all. The viands prepar ed and spread by the young ladies upon the divinely prepared table were all that a gastronomer could wish for. The day was delightful, the scenery sublime, and c lipid's darts fell thick and fast. We understand all the vacant houses, oflices, &c, have been al ready rented to persons desiring to come and enjoy the grand Tabernacle Association. And among other things on a boom here is the railroad. We are glad to chronicle that several among us who opposed and voted against it are going to lend a help ing hand to prosperity. Mr. Lewis Robinson who was dangerously wounded at the saw mill at Icard is improving rapidly. Xo one doubts now his recovery. The hotel for the accommodation of summer boarders at the famous Icard Springs, will be ready for visitors shortly. It is a handsome building 110x31 feet, two stories high, with an observatory of 10 feet. The work is being done by Elliott & Elliott of Rutherford C ol lege. Dr. E. E. Moore has returned to Rutherford College after a short sojourn at Glen Alpine. Station. Glad to see that Cleveland coun ty is solid on the railroad and hope to see old Burke chime in on Mmv 15th.
