A large and enthusiastic meet ing was held in the court house in Marion last Tuesday and perfect harmony prevailed. Judge Avery was unanimously en dorsed for associate justice of the Supreme court. t'aiidstinJe lor the Penitentiary. Henry Avery, apparently about 10 years old, son of Jason Avery, col., stole a box of cigars this week from -Davis Bros', store and was smoking on the streets as bir as life when he was detected and taken before Esq. Powe. The evi dence was sunieient to bind him to court. There are some more of this class who are constantly on the streets, and if not put to work, will have to steal for a liviiiir. :verj-f Prowjseetw. many friends of Judge gratified Judge The Avery feel very much at the bright prospects of his nom ination ior one ot the associate justices of the Supreme court. A large majority of the western counties have instructed their delegates to vote for him at the State Convention ; also many of the eastern counties are for him ; and it is conceded by all that the west is entitled to one of the num ber and no better man can be se lected to represent the west than Judge Aveky, and as an appre ciation of his abilities the people of the counties where he is best known are using all honorable means to secure his nomination. Our new board of aldermen have been sworn in and are now fully installed into their office; and while our old board deserve much credit for the business-like manner in which they conducted the town government and for the many improvements made by them, yet there is much for the new boaid to do, and we hope they will have the nerve to go for ward in the discharge of their im portant duties. Prominent among the unfinished business is to look after those places where it is said whiskey can be bought promiscu ously without prescription el even the plea of being sick. This is election year and law and order should prevail; but neither will prevail when men become full ol whiskey. Little Ivy. daughter of Mrs. Ada Morrison, was a favorite of all who knew her, on account of her sweet disposition and intelligent looking faee. Xo doubt her moth er is wondering at this (to her) strange act of Providence; but we must bear iu mind, "Whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth,''' and little ivy is called away only to be transplanted from this sinful world into the beautiful city above. And how consoling the words of our S iviour vrheii he said: "Suffer little children to come unto me and forbid thorn not; for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." Personal. Hicks, a very popular young man of our city,' left last week for the X-rth with a view of bettering his condition tinancially. Mr. P. V. CoiVev and family and Miss Emma Estes and Mesrs. Theodore Fsles and Kelly Sud denly all of Caldwell county, left Morganton Tuesday for Idaho. Mrs. Maigret Moore, of Morgan ton, was summoned to the buri; 1 of her step son, Mr. George Moore, of McDowell county, last week, who died at his home, of pneumo nia. Mr. Charlie Smith, of this coun ty, who was so badly hurt on a Virginia railroad a short time ago, we are glad to stale has sufficient ly recovered to letuni to his post again. We were among the fortunate number who were present at the grand opening of the Mountain Hotel last Tuesday, by Mr. Hamil- i Erwin, and it was certainly a line send off.
