VOL. I.
MORGANTON, N. C. FRIDAY. DECEMBER 8,1899.
The News Office Being Moved.
The News office will here
after be found in the Erwin
building' two doors above For
ney & Co.'s store, on ground
floor. The change is being
made to-day and is done in
order that we may have more
room and better accommoda
tions for our daily increasing
business. Our friends are
cordially invited to visit us in
our new quarters when we get
d up.
Pork Stolen.
Mr. I. T. Avery on Wednes
day butchered a 250-pound
hog. Wedntslay night a
thief entered his smoke-house,
which was left unlocked, and
relieved him of two of the
hams and one of the shoul
ders. Evidently the thief is
liberal and did not wish to
take all of the Solicitor's hog;
but Mr. Avery objects to him
taking the choicest of his
meat.
China Opening.
We doubt if there is a
prettier display of china, fan
cy articles, cut glass, pottery,
pictures, etc., in the State than
that shown bv Clavwell Bros.
Their china opening is now on
and is being attended by large
and admiring crowds. The
prices on these goods are
cheap, too, considering quali
tv. We bespeak for Messrs.
Clavwell Bros, a large holiday
trade.
A Delightful Dance
One of the most delightful dances of
the season was given Monday night,
complimentary to the visiting yourig
ladies Miss Folsom, of New York, and
Miss Lesh, of Boston. The couples
participating were the following: Miss
Folsom, Mr. J. E. Erwin; Miss Lesh,
A. C. Avery, Jr.; Miss Kate Burr,
Louie W. McKesson; Miss Sadie
Jones, of Lenoir. Stephen Frizard;
Miss Annie Erwin, Rufus Jones;
Miss India Bnmgardner, J. W. Wil
son, Jr.; Miss Clare Falls, Clifton
Pearson. Chaperones: Mr. and Mrs.
Z. T. Corpening, Dr. and Mrs. C. E.
Ross, Mrs. Thos. McBee, Mr. and
Mrs. B. . Gaither.
Record Breakers.
Mr. S. Huffman on
Wednesday sent us two tur
nips which weighed respect
ively five pounds three ounces
and six pounds four ounces.
They were raised in his gar
den "in WestMorganton. This
beats any record yet reported
here.
Mr. W. w7McGalliard
seems to be do'ng a "land of
fice" business just now in old
iron and dry bones. Bigpiles
of iron and bones are to be
seen on the lot adjoining his
store building. He also buys
old rubber shoes, furs, etc.
See his advertisement else
where in this paper.

were happily married on Wednesday
evening at 7 o'clock, at the residence of
the bride's father, on Green street,

happiness along life's journey.
