Mrs. Dora Brown, of Ma ri n, visited at Mr. Swindell's tii is week. Mr Pendland, of Linville Falls, was here to-dav on business. Mr. Mike Plonk, ot King's Mountain, was here last week on business. Messrs. R. P. Goodson and R. L. McConnaughey have returned from Virginia with :i nice lot of horses. Mr. J. W. Aver7 manages Mr. Goodson's livery business when the latter gentleman is absent from town. The Baptist State Conven is being held in Raleigh this week. Prof. E. McK. Good win and Mr. C. P. Brown are attending as delegates from the Morganton church. Mrs. Lizzie Pranks left last week to attend the S. C. Meth odist Conference, and from there she will go to Philadel phia to spend the winter with her son, Mr. James Pranks, of that city. The Masons of Catawba Valley Lodge will give a ban quet on the night of Dec. 27th for the wives and daughters of the Master Masons, and if possible the Eastern Star de gree will be conferred upon the ladies who desire to take the degree. Death of Mrs. Newland, at Randleman. The many Morganton friends of Mrs, Newland, of Randle man, were deeply grieved to hoar of her death, which oc curred last week. Mrs. New land was before marriage Miss M attic Ferree and was born and reared in Morganton. She was a sister of Miss Fannie Ferree and Mrs. Mary Higgins f Morganton David Ferree and the late John Ferree, of Randleman. She had fever in the fall and it ran into con sumption, which caused her death. She leaves a husband and several children. trUeinz's Baked Beans. S. mr. and Mrs. D. J. Hicks Entertain Friends. A delightful "At Home" was given by Mr. and Mrs- D. J. Hicks on Thanksgiving eve ning. The following were the invited guests: Misses Martha Bell, Hesta Reid, Sa rah Kinniard, Nettie McDan iels, Eugenia Welch, Olive Grimes, Nannie Fleming-, Mav Davis, May Herlock, Addie Hallyburtoni Flora Dula and Carrie Nimocks, and Messrs. Louis McKesson, Moran Col- lett, I. P. Jeter, S. R. Collett, t Ben Kibler, Ned Hallyburton, W. H. Pearson, J. T. Kitchen, Dick Bristol, Will Harbison, Joe Avery and A. W. Malone. TURKEY DINNER. Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Hicks also gave a turkey dinner last Wednesday evening. The turkey which graced the ta ble was won by Mr. Hicks at the turke3r shooting at Mr. Camp's on Thanksgiving day. On Thursday night of last week a Pederal prisoner by the name of Rector attempted to make his escape from jail here, and came very near suc ceeding, but Jailer Lane was a little too sharp for him. Mr. Lane about 2o'clock heard a pecking noise in of Rector's cell and suspected something was wrong. On going into the jail yard he discovered a man's legs protruding from a hole in the wall. Presently Rector came swinging down bv blankets. When he got about half way down Mr. Lane halted him, in the meantime faring a pistol into the air and commanding Rector to go back the 'way he came; but. Rector nervously declared that he could not, and came on down into the jailer's arms and was taken back in the jail and locked in a catre. Jailer Lane found a razor in one of Rector's over coat pockefeK. For the next 30 days, beginning Saturday, December 8th.
