n Bold Up!" It certainly U disheartening1 to a pa (lent to lind that tha treatment ha la a;lvn for a dlaeaae la more disastrous than tha disease. Haelf. Such ia the caaa, however, with tha usual treat ment given for diseases of tha blood. Notwithstanding the great progress wtatlta 4m vnstiv hrartffViea nf medicine, tha doctors have failed absolutely to find a successful treatment for blood poison, and tha many diseases having their origin la tha blood. They give but one kind of medicine, they know but ona treatment, and whether In the form of powder, pill or liquid, tha doctor' prescription ia always thj same potash or mercury. Too much cannot be said of the hrm f nl and disastrous effectsof these drugs, Tha doctors are unable to rid the sys tem of tha poison, and direct their sfforis toward covering up the symp toma from view. Thero Is but one ef fect to be obtained from potash and mercury they bottle up the poison and dry It up In the system, but It mast be remembered that they dry up the marrow In the bones at the same time, gradually consuming the vital ity. Those disfiguring copper-colored splotches are but Indications of worse results to follow. No sooner has the system taken on the full effects of this iKwerful drug than that suppleness and elasticity of the joints givca way to a stiffness, followed by tho racking pains of rheumatism. The form grad- POTASHJ nally bends, the bones ache, while de crepitude and helplessness prema turely take possession of the body. Under this treatment, it is but a short atep from vigor and health to a pair of crutchet. With this wreck of the system often comes falling of the hair and eyebrows, loss of linger nails, and decay of the bones a condition most horrible. This is no overdrawn picture, for the world to-day ia full of these hobbling mercurial wrecks. Contagious Blood l'oison is the most horrible of all diseases, and' h .is been appropriately called the curse of man kind. Until the discovery of S. S. 8., it was incurable. It has always baf fled the doctors, and it is in this dis ease that the evils of mercury and potash are most common, because these drugs are given in such large doses in an effort to counteract the poison. While they succeed in bottling up the poison in the system, it always breaks forth again, attacking some delicate organ, frequently the mouth and throat, filling them w'th eating sores. 8. 8. S. is the only known cure for this terrible disease. It is the same in other diseases of the blood. Scrofula, Eczema, Cancer, Rheumatism, all are given the same treatment by the physicians mercury and potash, and the result as above set forth is always the same. - We offer a rent'-'y purely vegetable, powerful in its effect, jet harmless in every way. For fifty yeais S. 8. 8. has been curing blood diseases, from the most violent to the mildest case, after all other treatment failed. It ia guaranteed purely vegetable, and one thousand dollars reward is offered for proof to the contrary. It is a real blood remedy for real blood troubles, and never fails to cure Contagious Blood Poison, Scrof ula, Eczema, Xheu n.atism, Cancer, or any other disease of the blood. If yon have a blood dis ease, take a remedy which will not injure you. Beware of mercury ; don't do violence to your system, lion't get bottled np! Ancient Implements of War Which Ars Now Quits Obsolete. Among the arms now obsolete which formed a lare part of the lu fun try equipment in tho days when the army was startod wus tho pike, which was in tlie form of a speur, with a flat and pointed head, mounted on a stalT from thirteen to eighteen feet long. The firearm In general use at the time was the matchlock. What would a sergeant major of the present day, with his men nrmed with tho magazine rifle, think of such a weapon as this: "Attached to tho lock of this musket was a pan, also a cock, tho hammer of which was somewhat In the form of a bird's, serpent's or dog's head; this bead was split, and a screw com pressed or eased the silts. The piece being loaded first with powder and then with ball, some powder was poured Into tho pan; tho pan was then shut to keep this 'priming' from dropping out and to keep it dry. When the soldier wished to fire, he fastened bis burning match Into tho slit of tho cock, Opened the pan, looked to his priming, pre sonted, nnd pulled tho trigger; the match, falling Into the powder in the pan, Grod It. "Between the pan and the breach of the barrel communication was es tablished by means of a small hole; when the piece was being loaded the grains of powder were naturally rammed and shaken dowu close to this hole, and when priming, the soldier took care to perfect the com munication of the powder in the pan with that in the barrel; thus the ex plosion in tho pan caused the Igni tion of the charge." Ia tho matter of modern conven iences Alaska Is emerging from its Obscurity and ranging up abreast of the times. A system of electric lighting, for instance, is being put ia fvt Juneau, one of the best known of Alaskan settlements, but a place nev tbeless of only two thousand inhabi tants. When completed this will be tbe first central electric light plant in tho territory. Electricity, however, Is not altogether new la Alaska. It has been used for wme time in a limited way In the mines. Water power is abundant everywhere, and the current is generated by the etreams and carried to the mines by cables. For Alaska Juneau is a live place, M tho saying Is. Two new wharves ra building just now, and the water eupply, having its source In a spring near the towns is being perfected. There Is no boom, however, for the reason that private capital is re pelled by tbe government owncr fchlp of the land on which Juneau ia buUt. A petition U now in Wash ington asking for tbe establishment of an Independent town site-. If such action Is taken. Juneau may bave work for the unemployed to da At present it is full of idle men who have gone up there eipecting to get m new start in life. N. Y. Evening Tost. BMrklru'a Arsuea Salve. When pins were first invented, some time during the third decade ' tlis b'iaUtuUi CciiiurV, it took one man a whoio day to make two dz mi, the market price of tlie diiy's output being but three shillings. Even ns late In the present century ux I3.H one pin went through the hands of twelve persons before it was finished and folded awuy In the little sheet of paper of tho regulation green To day, however, everything is dilTcr ent In the pin factory, a sinln ma chine turning out a stream of the little, neatly-polished, sharp-pointed implements at the rata of two lain dred per mlnuto, day and night. This wonderful little pin-making automaton is not larger than sewing machino, but it has more In- vlslblo knives, springs, sharpeners and pinchers about, it than a steam thrasher. The wiro from which the pins are made is toiled around small drum attached to the rear end of the machine, different sizes of wiro and pinchers being used for the several varieties of pins Tho wire misses from tho drum luto tho machine through small hole provided for that pur pose, being kept straight und taut by a brake on ihu urn nnd a series of Iron pegs across tlie platform of the machine. A queer little pair of pinchers "catchers seizes th wire and thrusts it through a hole, where It Is held while a small hum mer beats a head on the forward end of tho wire. Here It is held until a knife do 8cends und cuts the wire in proper pin length. Next it 1 allowed to drop into a groove through which the heads cannot pans, and while being held in that position is ex posed to the action of r. set of Kmnll Hies, which almost Instantly give it a stnfjoth, sharp point. Tho pin U now finished and ready for tho pol Ishing tub, which Is simply a revol ing barrel In which tho pins aro cleaned and polished by their own friction. After going through tho polishing tub they are Ixiiled in a so lution of acid und tin. This latter operation gives them their shining appearance. After going through tho acid bath they ore accounted as being finished and ready for the mar ket Mechanic. Hoi-Water Walls. There are wells which are veritable paradoxes In their nature, and which, says the St. Louis Republic, Instead of gr ing forth a cooling draught to the tired traveler, give him water at the boiling point. One of -hese, on tho premises of Dr. Lano, at Portland, Ore, in tho lan guage or the doctor, yields water a thousand times hotter than boiling." At Pino Grove, Esmeralda county, Nev., there is a well (drilled Sn 1888) which furnished water for tha miners to do their cooking with. Potatoes placed in tho stone basin at tbe well will cook through and through in eight minutes. The water of one of the artesian wells at Pesth, Hungary, has an average tempera ture of two hundred degrees and flows at the rate of one hundred and seventy-five thousand gallons every twelve hours. At Kilzla, Auj tralia, there U a boiling 6pring which Prof. Hilden avers is inbab lted by millions of small red fish. If theso little hot water denizens bo scooped from their natural element and placed in a pail of common drinking water they die instantly, and the queer part of the story is that the scales and skin slip off, just as though they had been scalded! Naturalists and commercial ex perts are bewailing tho fact that thero Is danger that the supply of elephant Ivory may soon be ex huuHted. At least sixty thousand elephants aro slaughtered yearly to obtain tho amount of Ivory neces sary to supply tho world's demand. The valuo of Ivory depends some what on the locality from which It comes. West African Ivory Is the most valuable. It. is exceedingly fino-gralned. and some of the choicest specimens havo tho semi transparent appearance of onyx. The best ivory comes from animals found in very warm and hurr.ld at mospheres. In northerly situations, where, tho air It cooler and dry, the product is conrso und harsh, lock ing tho velvety elasticity of tho other. Guinea ivory is slightly greenish ut first, but whitens upon exposuro to tho air and light. Vegetable Ivory Is obtained from taqua seed, and Is a valuable sub stitute for tho real article. There are several manufactured ivories, of which celluloid Is best known and lb, perhaps, the most vuluublc. In view of tho enormous consumption of ivory, tho establishment of ele phant farms Is suggested. Tho animals ure extremely docllo In captivity, and when reared with domestic surroundings nro manage able and may at tho sumo time bo made useful as beasts of burden. N. Y. Ledger.
