You Prefer Appearances Not Quality. Popularity ! It la the supreme test of tho times. It ia the eruci- blo in which is tested all things, The morits of a measure is deter mined by its popularity. Tho abil ity of a statesman is measured by his popularity. That this is true cannot bo successfully contradicted, that it is damaging is easily proven. In loaders it produces superficiality. They study to please the crowd and to catch the popular applause, in stead of studying the question. They sacrifice statesmanship for tho art of vote getting. In tho public this trait of the times produces vari ableness and fickleness. Popular approbation is a very shifty thing, and when its shit tineas is catered to, it increases, liko everything else, So it is, and many ordinarily gocd men in most respects, run alter dudo who has no regard for his ut terances, and leave the candid man to at 5 ft, when tliey push men to tho front. Still Another New Church, A handsome brick church is to be erected at Oak Grove, about two miles from Mount Airy, this spring and summer. The pastor, Rev. J. P. Fanning, ot Mount Airv circuit, got a mini her of the Methodists at ( )ak Grove together a few days ago, and in less time than it takes to write this ar ticle, got the members to decide to build a handsome new brick church Tho old church has lieen sold pulled down and hauled away, and a building committee appointed to raise the money and superintend the construction ol a new house of worship. The committee is as fol lows : E. F. Wall, J. V. Mitchell and M. H. Armfield. The house is to be 34.56 feet and will have a nice bell tower. At last accounts the committee had secured about three hundred dollars, and this sum is the amount raised on the spot when the church decided to rebuild. Everybody in the Oak Grove sec tion will help liberally, and a good subscription toward the church can be secured in Mount Airy. Dr. T. J. Mitchell, ot 'this place, who has shown great zeal in this important movement, informs us that a number of jk-tsohs wliu do not see their way clear to contrib ute money, are wiliiug and anxious to work or haul brick, lumber, etc 31 r. Jack Midkiff, who called on us a few days ago, lives close- to the church, and says he is very glad to see efforts being made to erect a re spectable building, and almj said he beleivcd everybody would aid in one wav or another. Tho Capo Fear A Yadkin Valley Railroad is getting a lot of froe ad vertising in tho newspapers. Tub Nkws would he glad if the builders could again get hold of tho prop, erty, but aa that cannot be, then let the Seaboard have it. The Wash ington Post saya: Tho Seaboard Air Line and the Southorn system, in their light for control ot independent routes, are now engaged in a war lor trie pos session of tho Capo Fear & Yadkin Valley Railway, which runs from Mount Airy to Wilmington, N. C, tapping the heart of the mineral, agricultural and iimber districts of North Carolina. This road is now in the hands of a receiver, and the New York members ot the reorgan ization committee favor its sale to the Southern Railway. Tho mem bers from Baltimore, Jiowever, are in the majority, and they strongly advocate the acceptance of the bea board Air Line's proposition to pur chase the road. It now looks very much as if the latter will bo successful, and the Southern now threatens to tap the Deaboard s territory by the construe tion of a branch lino to Southern Pines, connecting with tho Aber deen & West End Railway, and thus reaching at once the Seaboard's best timber districts and its greatest and most widely advertised nsort, Mount Airy Water Workt. Civil Engineer Greenlee, of Ma rion, McDowell county, this State, lias arrived md the work of sur veying tor iUotint Airy a Water Works has commenced. Mr. Greenlee has offices with Mr. T. B. McCargo, and will push mat ters. Mr. McCargo will assist in mak ing tho survey. In conversation with ditlerent parties we learn that it is now be lieved that 225,000 is moro than will bo required to do tho work. It is gratifying to tu as well as everybody else to see the work be gin. If the amount voted had been $75,000, work could also begin on graded schools and electric lights at once. Mount Airy must have the lights and schools, and every day these absoluto necessities aro put oil the worse it will be for tho town. We aro at the bottom of the down-grade business and Mt. Airy is once more getting herself in shape to do something. Let the citizens all pull together and work harmoniously for the upbuilding and good of the town, and in a few hort years we will- not remem ber tho "dose places" we have had to pass through. One part of town is as good as another and we must judge the people rather than the section of town, line of business. Arc. The onlv thing just now in the way, and we have but little of that article, is the few croakers in our midst. They, the croakers, do not amount to much, and every city and town is afflicted in the same way. Southern States Sdtleri' Convention. The Southern States Settlers' Convention to be composed of Northern and foreign-born citizens that is tj assemble at Southern Pines, North Carolina, May 5th, promises moro for tho South than ail the work dono heretofore to in duce capital and people South. The settlors propose to assemble from all sections of Dixie, and in convention say to tho world that mo, liberty and property are aa safo m the South as in any section of uie union. I hey will tell of the wonderful resources of thiboection ot America the excellent water powers, mag niheont forest of timber, rich mines or coal, iron and phosphate, tho i-uuuuuvu son anu the health-giving climate. J. he word of this convention will be so powerful and of such a national importance that no ono will here- aiter daro to get up in Congress and assert, or speak through tho 1 reus. words against the South and her people.
