Tho Fourth of July passed off without any formal colobration in this city. The time ouco waa when mou made prcat display when they desired to houor an occasion. Some people think the spirit of patriotism m WHiiinir because our pcoplo are nut. as enthusiastic as they may havo been in tho years past. Tho Junior Order is doing a great work in encouraging tho spirit of patriotism in tho young people. These corner-etono layings and the speeches heard on tho occasions are suro to implant in tho breasts of tho ririing generation a spirit of love for this country, and if unthiug more ib uccomplibhed this is enough. Hackett Comes Out Victorious- Blackburn Unable to Meet the Powerful Arguments of Bis Opponent, Makes a Scat tering Speech to Amuse the Crowd. About COO of. tho citizens of Rurrv County celebrated Inde pendenco Day in rather a novel way yesioraay. Both Hon- 11. N. Hackett, of Wilkes, candidate for tho nomi nation for coflgress in tho eighth district and Ex-Congressman Hluckburn bad arranged to srmuk each without tho knowledge of tho other. A joint discussion was arranged for by the friends of those gentlemen. This was the attraction that drew a crowd from all parts of tho county. Tho occasion was not without interest and the discussion was such us to hold the friends of each gentleman in anxious ex pectuiicy at all times. Mr. Hackett opened in a speech of ubout an hour; he very an propriately referred, during tho ijrst 15 minutes of his speece, to the fourth or July and the oc cusion wlncli it commemo rates. From this ho led oil uat ural'y and easily into the discuss ion of tho trusts and tho part that lias been played by tho Ko publican party in fostering the trusts. Ho was clear cut in this part of his speech and hewed clearly to the lino. Ho did not fail to pay due attention in his remarks to President Kooscvelt and his policy toward the negro. His discussion of tho tariff was not unlike tho usual presentation of this question by Democratic ora tors. Mr. llacket then took up tho Democratic Administration dur ing the incumbency of Gov. Ay cock, comparing hiu administra tion to that of Gov. Russell and showing the great good that has come to the State in the return of the Democratic party to jxiwer in Tsorth Carolina. He dwelt es penally uion tho advance that has been made in tho school system' during the present ad ministration and the support that has been given to our various institutions and asylums- His arguments along this line was unanswerable and Mr. Hiackburn did not attempt to re fute his statements. He cloeed his speech with a mas terly peroration, sublime in style, beautiful in diction, eloquent in delivery that would have done credit to any speaker, in any laud, and on any occasion. At the conclusion of his forceful speech which bad made a strong inpression upon his audience, Mr. Blackburn followed. It would be impossiblo to give the public any adi'jite idea ot Mr. Blackburn's speeck. It waa re inarkable in that he did not even attempt to answer or refute the strong positions taken by Mr. Hack ett. For collosal self at sura rice and unmitigated egotism, he has no superior in American politics. His speech on this occasion fully sustained lna former reputation along thi6 line. He satisfied him self in posing befoje his audience, u telling them what a wonderful man he was, what great things ho bad done for tbem and how he would finish the job when they re turned him to congress as no boobt tney would do. He endeavored to cast ridictilo upon the on-answerable arguments of Mr. Hackett,, whom be did not attempt to answer. s At the conclusion of a rambling -find disconnected talk of an hour and ton minutes, Mr. Hackett again took tho Inor; thia time not to in dulge in a logical and consecutive discussion of national and etate politics but to tear away the mafk from Blackburn and to expose hia claims to citizenship in tho eighth congressional district, and to employ the weapons of ridicule and impassioned speech to refuse the statements made by Blackburn. There was nothing noteworthy in Mr. isiackburns rejoinder it was along the lino of his first speech. The impression made on Mr Hackett's friends was that lie would make it hot for Blackburn if he should receive the Demo cratic nomination for Congress, while others think he would drive him from the held. Jar. Hackett made a strong speech at night at Central Ware house in Mt. Airy. . DASHED TO DEATH. Mrs. Seagraves, an Aged Lady Kill ed by Train at Mount Airy.
