Entered at the PoKt'OIIirB of Mount Airy, N. C. an aeeond cIuhs mail matter The Leader any.? that Mr. A. M. Smith of this city and Kx- Registe r of Deeds Warren Davis are both candidates for Sheriff. They are up against a toutfh prob lem w hen they try to defeat the present sheriff ior the nomina tion. And there are reasons. We have it on eood authority that no man has ever indulged certain classes of the x'Cple long er and more than has been the custom in this county. If a man was kiicwn to be a Democrat and in hard luck he was kt alone a bout his taxes and then he de prived himself of voting. A dep uty tax collector told us the past winter that in some neigh borhoods a larger pi r cent of the people had not paid any tax in from three to five years. Of course these delinquent tax payers want a man who will in dulge. Of course the she rill' has a perfect right to wait with a man if he c ares to it is a mat ter of business and no man has a legal right to raisrj a hand or say a word. Hut there is another side to the question. Not all the people can bo indulged by a sheriff and the truth is, if it was ail brought to light, that thesubstantial peo ple of both parties are forced to pay taxes promptly, as they should be, and they possibly think that there is some little grounds for complaint when a man uses the office of sheriff in a way to keep Iiinv.e!f and his followers in oli'ic? year after year for a generation. Tuere are rrrrro'us'o't tfscrrrnr "rt'efi rn the Republican party in Surry Ciur.ty who know full well that there is abso'uU-Iv no chance to defeat the will o sheriff because f the present of the uav he has indulged the people, but they r.re r.oi satisfied with a state of affairs that allows all the power to rest in the hands of any one mar.. No, the present sheriff wid r.ot be defeated in any conven tion in tlils count,' but he will be def ated at t'.v? po!!. Men of all classes and parties are not wiIIm g that an. o.u man shall control the policies of the c oun ty, absolutely, from year to ye nr. i he De i.et'rats srrc? out at Den ver this wee!: to nominate a can didate for .'resident. Dear sir: You did this vicinity a great injustice in your last weeks is sue, saying a blockade distillery was destroyed by Revenue offi cers 1 mile west of Iwgap. It seems for the last 10 years every still cut outside the incorporate limits of Mt. Airy, that it h claimed to have been found "near Iwiran". when in fact there has not been a "moon shine outfit cut up or even in operation in 5 miles of this nlaee in several years. The distillery your article re fers to was found about 1 mile north of Round Peak 1'. 0. a dis tance of H miles east of this place or in other words half way be tween Lowgap and Mount Airy. This vicinity is no Smithtown, the blockading districts are sev eral miles from here. We have good schools and churches here, and three-fourths of the men in 5 miles of this place voted for Prohibition. True this township gave a small majority against it but the other end or the lownstiip (Jul u. (Franklin is about fifteen mib.'S long. ) The point one mile west of Low- gap, where you sav the still was found, is to be found one of the largest Primitive P.aptist Churches in the county. We dare not let them know that yo i designate this point as a moon shine still House, fearing they would tear you "line from line." We will let vou oil this time with a little article correcting this er ror, but beware in the future. Very truly yours, It is custom to speak of the north western part of the county as the "Lowgap section" and we suppose that many occurrences are located in the "Lowgap .sec tion" that really happen many miles from Lowgap post olHce. The oflieer who was on the raid rell'erred to in the letter above gave us our information and if he was mistaken in the place where he found the distillery we were not supposed to know it. It is with pleasure that we see the Lowgap people ready to de fend their good name and the character or tno" community. Lditor The Mt. Airy News. A Bit oi Modern Hittory. In ISo.j, after Lee surrendered, late one night four young men who had followed the flag of the South until it was down, stopped in the little town of Salem, N. Jarvis, Silas Pardue, Aus tin Gentry and Rental Franklin. They were on thtir way home from the army and were poor and ragged and tiled. They had not a cent to pay their bill. The proprietor of the Helo house took Uum in, without the least hesita tion, and gave them splendid meals and goed beds on which to rest.
