TW rinjf of politlcian-H that control the politics of tho re publican party in this county must think that the people who are sujiposnt to follow thm arc a wt of iliot. The effort i.i made 'every year to lead the ieople by deceiving them. Iftst election when the Mt. Airy New show ed up a "treat that was pulled off at the Republican convention1 at DoHsoiii The Leader published on the front page a slanderous ar ticle and sigtH d. the name of "L. V. Mureham" to it. There turned out to be no such man in the county aa "L. V. Murcharn," and the article proved to be a gotten-up affair by some man who did not have the courage to say over his own name what he wanted to say. The Leader never correct ul the deception that it triel to put off on the people of the county by making that unjust attack. This year they are trying- even a greater deception on the pe ph The scheme would work all right if it was not that some one is willing to expose it. A recent law of Congress makes it the duty of every news paper to fiil out a statement shoiwinig who the editor of the paper is, who the publisher is and1 who are the owners. The st.atrrfcffnt. imitfit. hd Rworrii tn and oneTNp5 fileu with, 'the postmas ter and on, ov sent to the post office Department. The law also requires that the statement shall be pubilshed in) the paper within twd weeks after it is made so that the general public may know who Is conducting the pa per. Here is the law that the pulxlislier is required to follow : Sec. 467 Vfc. "It shall be the duty of the editor, publisher, bus iness manager, or owner of every newspaper, magazine, periodical, or other publication to file with the Postmaster General ami the postonaster at the office at which said publication is entered, not later than the first day of April and the first day of October 'of each year, on blanks fu mashed by the Post Office Department, a sworn statement setting forth tin names and post-office addresses uf the editor and managing ed itor, publisher, business managers, ami owners, and, in addition, the stockholders, if the publication be owned by at corporation ; and also the names of known ImhwI holders, mortgagees, or other security holders; .... A copy of such sworn statement shall bo published in the second issue of such newspupt r, maga zine, or other publication printed Jivxt after the filing of such statejvtt n. Any such publication shall le denied Hie privileges of thii mail if it sludl fail to com ply with the provisions of this paragraph, within ten days after notice by registered Jetter of such failure- 4. "Postmasters will obtain for the files of their offices two copies of the issue of ach pub lication at their respective of fices, in which the required sworn statement is published. 5. "Postmasters must give prompt ami uareful attention to the making and filing by publish ers of the statements required by this section, and promptly nport to the Third Assistant Postmaster General the failure of any pub lisher tf file such statement, or to publish it in the second isue of the publication nr'mte I nrxt after it has been filed." Here is the statement that The Leader filed with the PNt .Mas-: tcr in this town. j "The Mount Airy Leader, pub il.licd at Mount Airy. N. ('., i with S. V. Haymore, J. E. Albright, J. D Miniok and1 J. A. Tth, Mt. Airy, N. C. ; ' Vestal Taylor, White Plaiiw N. C; W. W. Hampton, W. A. York, and J. II. C. Nor man, Dobson, N. C. S. P. Lowry, Alanagin Editor, fciwora and subscribed to be fore me thin Oct. 1st, 1912. A. E. Tilley, U. S. Commissioner. Here is the statement that the Leader published in its issue of this month. "The Mount Airy Leader, pub lished at Mount Airy, N. C, with S. F. Lowry as majuigiiug editor- Owned by the Leader Publishing Co., with the follow ing stockholders : J. H. (Sparger, H. G. Gallawav, U. G. Iteltxm, G. G. Gallaway, S. E. Marshall. It. L. Haymore, J. E. Albright, J. D Minick and J. A. Tcsh. S. F. Lowry, Managing Editor. Sworn and subscribed to be fore me th'w Oct. 1st, P A. E- Tilley, U. S. Commissioner. Now it would be interesting to hear the owners of The Leader explain why they swore that W. V. Hampton, Vestal Taylor, J. H. C. Norman and W. A. York were owners and then delib erately violate the law by leav ing out the names of these gen tlemen. If they are part own ers of the paper why not give the- facts as the law directs! Every ono knows that some f the men who are left out of ' the published statement are the real leaders of the republican party in this county, and just why The Leader is taking chances of getting excluded from the mails by not publishing the statement that was filed with the postmas ter is an interesting question. If The Mt. Airy News or any other paper in the county had put off such a piece of deception ass that it yould be excluded from the mails. The law requires that the state ment shall give the name of the editor. In The Leader's state ment they refuse to put down the name of the editor, so Un people are left in the dark as to who is handling out the gems of thought. S. F- Lowry is put iluwn a.s Managing Editor. Why have the owners of The Leader been willing to violate the law and keep in the dark who is editing the paper? Are they covering up something that they are not willing to give out th facts as the law directs! Why do they swear to one statement ami publish another -which is a clear violation of the law! The postmaster of this town will hardly be a party to thus rank deception that has been put off on the people. Will lie file two copies of the Leader as the law directs when he knows that the statement pifldished is a different statement from that sworn to and filed with him! We shall see. And thus another piece of their deception is shown up. No won der the people who compose the rank and! file of the republican party in this county art- not wil ling to follow the men who are trying to lead them at this time- Now that The News has shown up the ring that is controlling the Republican party in Surry County it will be in order to hunt lid) another L. V. Burcham. Womler if the Hon. Iredell Meyers managed' to get his din ner while in the Taft stronghold! These professional plioticians could win all right if there was no one to .show up their game. The Leader is a mighty good paper 15 be run without an e.litur. Wuuh-r if L- V. Purcham owns tnck iiu The Leader- ' After all it is lukrhty hard to r i ti. f Ta.fti.tes in Saddle Nominee Ire dell Meyer gmibbed. That three fourths of the Re publican voters of Surry County advocated the candidacy of Theo dore Roosevelt before the Cjhic ago Convention is a well' known fact. That the Taft machine in North Carolina with the aid of the Charlotte police force took charge of the State Republican Convention at Charlotte and re fused to admit any delegate fa vorable to Roosevelt is like-wise a matter of history. That the Taft machine compos ed of three or four office holdtrs and political dictators took the Republican County Convention by the nape of the neck ami dic tated with an iron hand not only the policy of the convention but all of the nominees is also a well known fact. It is quite surpris ing that the "rank and file" of the Republican Party in Surry County will sit quietly by and re ceive with indifference such treat ment at the hands of a few members of. the old guard whose loyalty to the Party has been whetted up in the past by many of the most lucrative offices at the hands of the voters of Sur ry County. But it doesn't stop here. ISeveral days ago there was published in the state papers an announcement that Hon. Iredell Meyers, Progressive candidate for Governor, would speak at Mount Airy on Wednesday, Oct. 16th. While we had heard of this an nouncement and while we had heard references to it on the streets, it was a conspicuous fact that it had not been widely ad vertised, On the noon train yes terday Hon- Iredell Meyers ar rived in Mount Airy. After look ing around with much surprise ami disappointment he failed to t'ind any reception committee. After some difficulty he secured a seat in the public bus and went to the hotel. Upon his ar rival there he still found no committee. After wandering around the streets for some time he visited the post office to ask for an. explanation. We are not stire what was said, butwe are sure that when the buss return ed to the station he was again a passenger. He may not have spoken to thousands of voters in all of his appointments over the State, he may not have been met by brass bands and escorted with healdry through the streets, but we are certain that he has never recelv- ed such an indifferent and dis courteous reception as he receiv ed here. The Taft Republican machine in Mount Airy and in Surry County may have dictated the policies of the County Con vention, they may have selected the nominees of the party, but when their dictatorial sway be comes so complete, and so abso lute that they can by their im perial dominion frown with dis pleasure and contempt upon a representative of the man whom the Republicans of Surry County wanted as their Presidential can didate and refuse to allow Roos evelt advocates to even hear his liepresentative, it 'should be time that Rt publican voters of Surry County would say to these men, in the words of the motto of the .State of Virginia, "Sic Sem per Tryannis" sometimes trans lattd "Get your foot off my neck."
