Farrior waa under sentence for shoot ing Jim Swindell in the Elisabeth City jail. It waa atated that the county had been pot to considerable expanse in the trial of Farrior and in caring for the man whom he had shot. It waa provided that any excess of the mon ey paid by Farrier would be turned over to the school fund of the coun ty. Farrior waa represented by Percy W. McMullan and J. C. D. Fringhaus, of Elizabeth City and A. D. Ward of New Bern. The executive expressed his opin ion that Joe Swindell should have been electrocuted and that sympathy had been aroused in favor of Swindell by the action of Farrior. "For nearly four years I have been here trying to see that the state pro greased and that all laws were en forced" said Governor Morrison, "and I am sure that had Mr. Farrior let the law take its course and that the little girl had testified that Swindell would have been sentenced to death. "I commend the position taken by Judge N. A. Sinclair in hia condemna tion of the actions of the men in toth cases. The laws of this state are sufficient for the punishment of all crime." Commission mar chants and carriers tonight took stops to have express companies es tablish an embargo <>n fowl as rigid as that declared by the railroads. "There will be no live fowl of any kind on the market in New York city during the holidays," said the head of the Live Poultry Merchants assorts tion. "There is no prospect that the fears of the housewives can bo allay ed. and order restored in time for U»s Christmas and new years trade." Twenty-five carloads of chickens— approximately 460,000 pounds of fowls—wore shipped westward today because they had failed to pass in spection at New Jersey terminals or because demurrage, shrinkage, coat of feeding and the demoralised stats of the market promised a total loss to the receiver who undertook to dispose of them in New York. During the three week holiday be ginning December 16 last year New York city absorbed 879 carloads of live chickens, turkeys, ducks and geese—S.500,000 fowls or about IS, <*00,000 pounds. At the name time the city absorb ed 21,000,000 pounds of dressed poul try, snd an unrecorded number of mil lions of pounds of cold storage fowl. Commission men believed today that unless the wave of apprehension <vhich already has paralysed the large Jewish and the smaller Italian mar ket, can be stemmed, this holiday trade in 1924 will be reduced to vir tually nothing. ' A move to allay the fears of housewives waa contained In the an nouncement of Dr. Prank J. Monag han, health commissioner of New York city, that on and after today all poultry offered for sale in the city will have been paaaad by the board of health. At the same time, the Live Poultry Commission Merchants association publicly declared that "the European disease with which poultry from eight mid-western states has hscstos af fected has been found by several scientific institutions to be abaohrta ly incommunicable to another snl—I or to human beings."
