is saying nothing of the in ert m* m th« growth of Um city within the corporate limits. Um there baa been a steady and lubatan tial growth that ia at no nflrcted in the achooia. Every indication now point* to the day in no diataat future when Mount Airy will be one of the large centers of population ia this part of the country. AS THE OFFICERS SEE IT. Two official* of this city were lalk inf shout various matters on* day recently and don cunt in for part of the talk. One official said. if the people of this town and auction know how much •uffering it product*, both mentally and bodily, to take thU treatment ior hydrophobia they would put an end to doc* tannine *t large. He went on to My that in the put few wick* three citiirn* have had to take the hydrophobia treatment in this town and one of them wa» a), ready a aiek man with a aeii^oa trouble before he bad the bad luck to run into a mad doc. The official aaid he would not go through *uch an experience for $600 of any man** money. And then we thought that if the folk* who keep doc* and permit them to run at large could realise how much they annoy their neighbors they would keep up their dogs. There are numbers of homes in this town where an effort is being made to beautify the grounds. A pack of running romping dogs is Just about as de structive to flower bed* and gardens a* a loose cow or horse. The wonder is that people are as patient as they are with the folks who let their dogs run at large when it is generally known that dogs spread the worst diaaase known to the race, and that many of the dogs in this section are subject to the disease. A FOOL ON THE ROAD. A citizen was driving on the state highway near thl* city one day recently and had to take to the gut tar to avoid a collision with a man who held to the crown of the road and made no effort to divide space when passing the approaching ear. The citiaen indignantly remarked. That man la a fool," aad ha was and is, for any man who refuses to give part of the road when passing another ear sadaagsr* his own life and the lives if thou iii tin otlmr cap. The folks of this state may got ready to moat the now regulation* that ware written into Mr law hooks at the recent term of the legislature. Children driving has lucnm* *o com mon that an effort will he made to stop tt. Drunk men driving will face a now condition when the now laws are in of* atlnn. And rat three natural resources lay undeveloped century after eintury, or until foreign capital and talaat get permiasion from China t« come and develop •hem. So great wae tha opportunity to profit by the effort that adventar era from all natione went to China and Invested their aconey and took the riek of living among the natives while engaging la bueineee there. Croat mining corporations ware de veloped, hundred of mBas of rail road were built, modem awehbiery aad methode of doing business found a way into every city of any im portance ta all the great country. And yet, China remained, year after year, hostile to all thee* modem ways of doing business. Their re ligion and customs were tied to tha ,«at with no outlook for the future. Along with all thia induatrial de velopment, men of a religioua turn "t mind felt the call to preach tha roapel to the Chinaman, in every city of importance and In Many of the entailer towna, consecrated men and wosn-n by the tbouaand have rone and built home* and adtoola and churchaa and are giving their entire time to teaching the truths of the gospel. The work of thaae Chriatian work era ha* been bleeaad with eueceaa and many thouaand of native China men are now caracal Chriatiana. A doaen years ago tha ancient kingdom went on tha rocks and a republican form of government was established. .Since that time turmoil has been the rule in their country. Evidently they are not yet capable of under standing how to operate aad live under a republican form af govern ment. Just now two or more fac tions are trying to control tha coun try and they sre resorting to srms to carry their point It seams that all factions of Chiaa have agreed among themselvee that the foreign imputation is not to be desired. They are hostile to all foreigners. They would rid the whole country of every foreign citisen, thus getting; rid of th»ir troubles. Of course all this talk is only a way of appealing to :h* ignorant masses of the people. There is hardly any wealth in China that does not belong to fortigners. Foreigners have been responsible for all the advancement in the recent years. The papers for no telling how long will be full of the accounts of the stirring times that are being enacted 'here in these modern days. Whan 'he city nf Nanking was captured last week a distinguished educator. Dr. J. E. Williams, connected with a j University in that city was robbed nnd shot dead by the victorious soldiers. Before he was killed a soldier cut off his finger In an effort to remove » ring that the doctor wore. All tha horrors of war that were ever enacted are daily event* now in China. Up to this time missionaries have remained at their posts of duty, but they are now fieein* for safety from the section where the war I* raging. All their property, bosses, schools and churchaa are being looted, tha furaitnrs and all valuables taken and in auuty instances tha property barn *d. Such la the situation at thia thae In China.
