Btltmore Village—as It was known
for many years—was established by Mr.
VandarbUt at the time the New York
er was building the famous Vander
bllt mansion
Par many years Blltmore was one of
the show places of western North Car
olina. but progress. in recent years, has
done much to destroy its original beau
ty. The pebble-dash English type of
homes and buildings have given way
to dwellings at brick, stucco and stone.
Even the famous plaaa haa witnessed
numerous changes. Including the erec
tion of ar.odern type brick office and
business buUilngs.

The town came into existence and

same family. The late J. 11 Chiles was
first mayor of the town at Kenilworth
after It officially became 'Chartered
and began to function aa a town; and
his widow. Mrs. Leah U. Chiles, was
mayor at the town at Kenilworth when
its existence ended.
