It js reported that the Brooklyn, Schley's flag ship, landed 60,000 rounds of ammunition, together with rifles and food for the insurgents, after the fight below Cienfuegos Tuesday. A fort on the south side of Cienfuegos , bay was knocked to pieces by the Marble head. The Spanish cavrlry was routed simultaneously by 700 Cubans. Many Spaniards were killed. Reports from Madrid to the effect that theSpanish government desires peace, is construed here as a fresh hint of the continental powers. Despite inspired warnings to the contrary, Spain expected their friendly intervention early in the war. - As the Spanish burdens grow heavier and the outlook for the war grows darker for Spain, her disap pointment over the correct neutrality of the powers increases. If any man can draw a satis factory or reasonable conclu sion from the wire news today, we will give him a chromo. One rumor is that Sampson was defeated and killed by Cervera; this not haying been confirmed we take it for grant ed to be a lie. A later report is that Schley forced the en trance to Santiago and de stroyed Cerveras fleet. Ths report is also hardly reliable. There are various rumors as to the location of the Spanish fleet. f It is reported and -denied that the New York Journal yacht was captured by the Spaniards. We can not account for these rumors, unless the cor respondents are trying to force the government to give out news, in having to deny rumors. ON THE PACIFIC. Gen. ' W ''? ; Loudon, May 28.--Simplicity charac terized the obsequies over the body of Gladstone today The ceremonies were impressive because entirely devoid of pomp. No insignia were worn in the procession. England's foremost men were clad in ordinary mourning costumes. Not a flower and not a bit of drapery were placed on the plain oak coffin ia the centre of Westminister Hall. The speaker of the hous of commons, in robes and wig, was preceded by mace bearers and ollowsred by four hundred members of parliament. Hayden Jones and Charles Thrall, World correspondents who were captured by the Spaniards and exchanged for Spanish prisoners, arrived this morning on the gunboat Woodbury. Washington, May 28. Dewey cables that the situation is unchanged. '' If Cervera's fleet is at Santiago harbor tt is said to be probable that 10,000 troops will be sent to co-operate with the insurgents in a land attack on San tiago. If this idea is adopted, after tak ing the city, seige guns would be mount ed on the hills surrounding the bay and thus a heavy attack made on the Span ish fleet, forcing it to surrender or eke go to sea, when it would be met and whip ped by Schley's fleet. The senate re sumed consideration of the war revenue bill, after considerable delay in securinga quorum. Senator Allison said he hoped that the vote could npw besecuredby the co-operation of those who favored the tax proposition providing for a special excise tax amendment. Telegraph to The Free Press. New York, May 28. A special to The Times says that The New York Journal yacht "Buccaneer" has been capture dby a Spanish warship, off Porto Rico. The captain of the yacht claimed German registry. All on board have been sent to Germany under guard. Spain will ask the Berlin government to investigate their claim of German registry. ; New York, May 28. Balloons for the use of the navy were delivered this morn ing at Governor's Island, by Maurice Mallet, a French aeronaut. They will be forwarded to Commodore Schley imme diately to assisthim in locating the Span ish armada. 'v - Journal Denies It.
