Powers and Davis Not Smart
Enough to Evade Vigilance of
Goebelites .- r. '
Lexinsrton. ' March - lO.Jnst as the
Chesapeake & Ohio express left Frankfort
tonight twenty-seven state guards under
command of Lieut. Frank Peake of the
Covington company, boarded the com
bination coach. One of the men in sol

itv in the murder of William Goebel,
They bad not gone five minutes until the
wires to Lexington were at work and
tbe local officers 'were notified.; The of
ficers were Offered $1,000 if tbey arrested
Powers and 1500 if they captured Davis.
Half an hour before the' tram arrived
t became well known over town that the
uiritives were on board and would be
apprehended if possible. A large crowd
of Goebel. men srathered at the depot,
ready and willing to help the officers if
necessary, and the local guard of militia,
mprovised by uapt.xougmire to guard
tbe armory was on hand. The greatest
excitement prevailed when nearly tbe en
tire police force and all the deputy eher-
lis rushed into the car containing the
fugitives and began trying to , arrest
them. : The policemen -held their revol
vers and stuck them in the - faces of , the
soldiers, so that the latter could not
raise their rifles to shoot. When Lieut.
eake drew his revolver it was knocked
out of his hand and be was arrested.
When Powers resisted be was strucK on
tbe head with a billy, , which laid .open
the scalp. ' As the men emerged from the
coach a loud yell went np from the Goe-
ber sympathizers, and Davis begged , his
captors to protect him from the mob.
The men were rushed to Jail, where tbey
were placed in separate cells and allowed
to see no one. . :
Davis and Powers were both disguised.
Both 'Wore the regular uniforms com
plete, even as to tbe leggings. Davis had
shaved off his moustache and goatee.
He had $125 in money on his person and
a revolver. There was found on Powers
$1,800,. .
in tne insiae pot-Ket oi eacn man -was
bund a pardon from Gov. W. S. Taylor,
duly siarued and sealed. : ' -' '
Attorney VV,f .tr. Dunlap, Postmaster
F, C. Elkiiw and Attorney- ft, C. Stoll
called on Secretary of State Powers later
and to tae Associated Press correspon
dent they stated that Powers; told Dun-
ap substantially tbat he was not fleeing
rom arrest. ; He was ' eim ply getting
away. from Frankfort to avoid lying in
jail as Whittaker had done, that he had
nothing to fear from arrest, as he was
not guilty of the charge, and that he was
going to Barboursvilie in the eleventh
onffressional - district, v where Taylor's
jurisdiction was fully recognized.1. 7
Capt. Davis had little to say to them
except that he thought he had made a
mistake in leaving home: that he bad
nothing to fear from a trial. Neither
explained his disguise.
