It la not aurprlslui, that the late d- . structlve volcanic couvulalona on Mar- Unique and St Vlncnit ahould have . brought out vigorous warnings from eertalu quarter aRulnnt im Isthmian ' canal over the propositi Nicaragua route, which we are told is lu the very center of the volenuie nud seismic , jbelt . When these warnings vouie from ome promotera of a syndicate that baa acquired an Intereat In the Fana ma canal who are anxious to dlgposj v of the aame to the United Statea for a consideration, they excite no wonder. though they may indicate a motive of sordid ' calculation.- When, however. persona notoriously hostile to any ca . tint whatever draw up the awful cata logue of the ."eruptions, quaklngs, cat actysnis and catastrophes that have shaken and torn Nicaragua and Costa Rica since the duwn of history. In con- trast with the lovely peace and Iran qullllty of the I'unama region," the fa- ; miliar policy of employing the remote ; project to kill oft the one that la near ; and Imminent Is distinctly revealed, The Isthmian canal commission. whose members have doubtless given s careful and competent study to the question as the eminent gentlemen who. owning and controlling transcon tinental railroads, are sounding so loud an alarm against "the folly of building a canal under the belching craters that stud the Nicaragua route, reported that from the period of the Spanish conquest down to the present time there have been fourteen seismic and volcanic convulsions In the vicinity of , the Nicaragua and twenty-eight In the ranama region. Touching the earth- ' quake risk of the Nicaragua route, the . ccmmlsslonrsald In Its report: 1 It Is possible and even probable that the more accurately fitting portions of the ca- : nal. such as the lock sates, may at time be distorted by earthquakes, and some In convenience may result therefrom. Thai contingency may be classed with the ac- , cldental collisions of ships with the gates and is to be provided (or In the name - way by duplicate gates. It is possible also that a Assure might open which would drain the canal and If It remulned open might destroy It. This possibility ahould not be erected by the fancy Into a threatening danger. If a timorous Imag ination Is to be the guide, no great work 1 can be undertaken anywhere. This risk mar be classed with that of a great con- - flagratlon In a city, like that of Chicago in un or Boston in 1ST! . It la the opinion of the commission that such danger as exists, from earthquakes is essentially the same for both the Nica- rajrua and Panama routes and that in neither case is It sufficient to prevent the construction of the canal i Of course the human mind , cannot forecast ' the convulsions of nature .which may occur In the future either In Nicaragua or ranama or elsewhere on the earth, though it would seem ' that the recent eruptions in the Lesser Antilles were being rather overworked by the opponents of the isthmian canal project. - HERE ia no doubt in my mind that wireless teleg raphy will be a great commercial success.) (It Ja a 'mistake to call it wireless telegraphy, for the water acta as a wire with salt water very much better than fresh water. These messages will hare a field entirely ... their own, and for oceanic messages between fixed points on land the cable will always be superior , tH U WIRELESS MESSAGES MAY BE SENT ACROSS THE OCEAN, BUT THE, WORK WILL BE NECESSARILY SLOW. THE WIRELESS SYSTEM CAN NEVER COMPETE WITH THE CABLES IF THE CABLES ARE DEVELOPED TO THEIR HIGHEST EFFICIENCY. The cables certainly are not so developed today. It would be possible for cable messages to be sent at the rate of 1,000 words a minute instead of the very alow method of today. " , t i The Marconi system will compel cable companies to lay new cables which can send messages without delay end with great rapidity. When such cables are laid, there will be no competition between them and any wireless system. This is duo to the fact that the wireless message is not concentrated, but is weakened by being scat tered. It goes everywhere, and is not picked up until it strikes a current attuned to the same number of vibrations. .. t t .vi; There is an infinito number of points on the scale of inductance, and it is possible to so adjust two wires that they may receive mes sages from each other at this infinity of attunements. This would make it extremely difficult for a hostilo operator to pick up a wireless message. Suppose two fleets of battleships were enemies, If I was talking to one of my own fleet and the enemy sought to get the message, it would take them A long time to catch the attunement, and by the time the enemy could catch the tune, 'so to speak, it would be changed to another. The value of the Marconi system vti) lie in the communication with ships on the ocean. There will be tremendous business along just this line. - :,.: ' t' at,'. ; ' ? !? These atmospheric poisons are breathed into the lungs and taken up by the blood, and the foundation of some long, debilitating illness is laid. Chills and fever, chronic dyspepsia, torpid and enlarged liver, kidney troubles, jaundice and biliousness are frequently due to that invisible foe, Malaria. Noxious eases and unhealthv matter collect in the system because the liver and kidneys fail to act, and are poured into the blood current until 1 it Decomes so polluted ana smggisa tnat me poisons literally breaK tnrough the skin, and carbuncles, boils, abscesses, ulcers and various eruptions of an indolent character appear, depleting the system, and threatening life itself. The germs and poisons that so oppress and weaken the body and destroy the life-giving properties of the blood, rendering it thin and watery, must be overcome and carried out of the system before the patient can hope to get rid of Malaria and its effects.
