The attitude of the republican party
toward the trnsta Just at thla time is
very Interesting, not to say amusing, to
the student of political matters. It Is
very anxious concerning public sentiment
in regard to the trasis.and the leaders of
the party, who have their ears close to
the ground,; have sounded the warning
cry of danger ahead, hence the great
upstirin the wigwam of the big chief,
It la amusing In view of the fact that
they have placed themselves in their pres
ent prdlcauient deliberately, by increas
ing (he tariff until its only possible excuse
for its present outrageous proportions Is
to foster trusts. They have been told by
members of their own party repeatedly,
and men who are beneficiaries of a high
protective tariff at that, that a high tartfl
was the mother of trusts and conse
quently cannot plead the baby act' But
with characteristic persistence In doing
something to get his party Into a hole,
Roosevelt has called into his secret coun
cils men who, during the last session of
Congress, did make somepuerlleeffortsto
curb the trusts, thinking thereby to fool
the voters of the country, but such
hypocritical moves will not go, as the
people iu this case will give honor to
whom honor U due. ,
It is entirely too late now to take ac
tion asralnst the trusts becanne Congress
has adjourned, a)d republican attorney
generals and judges declare that the law
6;:tiinet trusts Is ineffectual, and therefore
they caTinot be reached by existing

HANY men who arepreparing for a profession are dis-'
tinctly injuredby the last year or two in college. .
I Thero are somevmen for whom the college atmos-
j phcre, as distinguished 'from that of the professional
school, is not a wholesome one. Men who in col
lege idle away their time in many, cases find the more strenu
ous life of professional training exactlyismted to their needs.
THE FEELING GR0W8 8TR0NGERHN EVERY QUARTEB THAT
THE COLLEGE' COURSE, AT LEAST FOR THOSE WHO ARE TO
ENGAGE IN A PROFESSION, MUST BE SHORTENED. - .
It does not seem that theHarvanl plan of three years meets with4!
general favor,everi in Cambridge, although, according to the official ;
report, 40 percent of the men now graduating from Harvard col
lege finish their academic work within three years. It would seem
to be a better plan to fallow those who do not contemplate a profes
sional course of study; to take the full four years of work in college i
