the usual human frailties and prejudices, it could be
made to command the respect which it must hare
if its promulgations are to be accepted.
We already have two institutions either of which could perform
this duty quite as well as a new governmental bureau. The National
' Academy, of Sciences has as its reason for existence the desirability
of having a body of pre-eminent scientists to which the government
may refer any scientific question in the assurance that the answer
will be as nearly correct as human liability to error and the bounds
of human knowledge will ;permit - ' -
IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR THE PRESIDENT OP THE
JUNITED STATES OR CONGRESS TO CALL UPON THE NATIONAL

The Smithsonian institution could also be relied upon to adjust
such 'disputes by calling to- its- council the specialist in tW subject

To Beelaiaa Jtttf Marshes. .
Again wo read in the New York
papers of a project to utilize the
"Hackensack meadows," that vast
tract of marsb land at the western ap
proach, of tho seaboard metropolis
where, according to tradition at least,
are bred the famous Jersey mosquitoes.
The wonder is( that , those broad
stretches of pestilential water and land,
all too Intimately mingled, were not
long ago turned Into the - truck farms
for which New York has for many and
many years supplied one of the . beat
markets In the world, i 'For sanitary
a well as financial reasons It seems
that enterprising New ' Yorkers and
Jerseysoen' wouM have long ago trans
formed these malarial swamps Into
fruitful fields. . ; To ; reclaim- salt
marshe like tbo Hackensack mead.
owa Is tbe simplest of tasks, so simple
that It wav well within' the powers of
tho much) - sung 'Acadlans of Nova
Scotia, whom nobody will claim were
more enterprising or Intelligent than
the denizen of the great metropolis
and Its environs. At the mouth of the
Gaspereau river these simple Acadlans
fenced tbo waters of Mlnas out of
thousands of acres of Just such marsh,
and behind the lotv dikes they Swflt
lie today, fields whicb even In that
remote region are worth, from $200 to
300 an acre, while good ordinary farm
land on the neighboring: slopes can' be
purchased for about f25 an acre. '
As much could have- been done not
only for the Jersey marshes, but for
almost Innumerable acres along both
sides of Long Island sound, thus form
lng a source of almost Inestimable
wealth. A valuable leRson- eould have
been learned from the simple-Nova Sco

too late,' though' It is announced that
the present project for reclaiming the

t Unit of Measurement Needed..
According to a dispatch-from. New

married the other day at that resort
of wealth and fashion received, three

It would appear that polite society

The recent discovery of what are

; Mr. T. W. Mewbora moved tbit the
course of the Board of Trustees be ep
proved and that It I authorise'! to select
the old site, s " '!?, y-j '
Mr. J. A. McDanlel said that While no
onedouoted the olncrity -of the board
but many bought they had made a
mistake In selecting the oM site and he
movKf that a committee" be appottited tn
assist the board In selecting a more
central sitov He plead for no-special site
but wanted to see the people' satisfied.
They are not eatlfid with the- present
site and want more , central one. The
people In tho northern part do not want
tho school In tho southern part, nefther
do the people in the southern part want
It in the northers- part, therefore . the
thing to do Is t locate It centrally
During the campaign, 1 he averred tho
promise had been made- to select a central
site. , ' :
Mr. L. Harvey said' he did not remem
ber ouch a promise ever being made.
This brought Mr. iWHlnee to his feet,
who asserted that air. Harvey had made
such a promise to him, saying that the
populists and republicans had put the
school on Its present site and that the
board would select a more central one,
For that reason Mr. Hlnes said be work
ed to pass the bill and he let many men
leave tbelr work In the mill to vote for
the bonds.
Mr. T. T. Ormond offered a substitute
lor ; Mr. Mewbors's motion ' and -; an
amendment to Mr. McDantePe, that the
trustees be requested to select a site from
'the central part of Kins ton bounded on
the north by Peyton avenue, on the east
by East street, on the south by Gordon
street, and on the west : by Queen street.
In speaking for this motion Mr. Ormond
said this would exclude the present site
as well as other sites for which certain
factions were contending. , Upon sug
gestion bl Mr. ' McDanlel the motion was
amended aad accepted by Mr. Ormond
that the space be bounded by the A. 0. L.
E. K.1 instead of East street thus adding
in the Webb lot and the Tiffany Wee lot
and this ! where there came very near
being a settlement. In a few inmates
Mr. Ormond . changed : his mind and
wanted the .George Webb lot and the
Tiffany West lot excluded. i
Dr. T. B. Faulkner la a short speech
said he could see no reason : why these
lots shoald be excluded. Thees very lots
vehlch the people had expressed a prefer.
ence for, were now, being gotten ousof
the way. The trustees, be said, waaied
the present site on tho extreme edge of
Kmston, and the people wanted aoentral
site. Dr. Faulkner said ho knew of no
othereeatrsi sites except thees two, aad

At tne Baptist Church Sunday
Bvenlng.
A good crowd considering tae Inclement
weather was at the Baptist church 8un
day evening. The sermon by the pastor,
Rev. G. N. Cowan was thought by many
to bo one of the best delivered la Einstoa.'
His subject was stated negatively "Our
Religion Cannot be Bought or Sold."
Our religion In the first place, he said, 1
a epirtual religion." It la the work of the
Holy 8plri upon the spirit of the Individ
ual, and it Is impossible to Buy' splrtuat "
things with material things. There Is a ,
materialism la the World that would re-
duos everything to material' basis.
This materialism seeks to reduce our ro
llgtoa to4 material basis. ..The realm or
the material and spiritual ' are eeparate
ana aisiacs. ,xa snore inero is a cnasm
between tbetwo which cannot be bridged.
Even the evohitlonlat does not try to do-
this;, -v; - . w.-. '-A'V'rf
la the second place our religion cannot
be bought because It is eternal. Yon .
cannot buy eternal things with that
which Is limited1 and peculiar to time.
Baying and selling are peculiar to time. '
That which Is boendless and unchan ga
ble cannot be obtained by that which Is '
clrcamscrlbed by time and) perishes with ':
time. Our material gifts cannot purchase-
for no eternal inheritance'.
Thirdly our religion is incommunicable. '
Sometimes when wo see our friends go
ing Into sin and wickedness-, we feel we
should like to share our epirtual gifts
with them but we cannot. ( -
J But again our religion rests not . upon
station and standings in life-, but upon
character. Our religion Is- for the rich
and the poor, the learned and unlearned, "
the wlss and the simple. " The chariot of
salvation halts alike af the hovel of the
poor and the palace of tbe- rich.
