The first shipment of asparagus was made today from this place, Mr. J. V. Grainger jndinjr one crate from Ver non farm. It was sent to Philadelphia. The market quotations are sixty cents per bunch. The 8'eamer Goldsboro passed here Thursday en route to Newbern loaded with 93 bales of cotton .from Hardy's Bridge, sold to Messrs. L. Harvey & Sons, by Mr. W. L. Hardy, Mrs. L, V. Rouse and others. Miss M.O. Erskine returned last night . from' New York with Miss Wessel, their milliner, who was with them last season, where they had been buying their. stock and familiarising them selves with the latest New York styles : and the roost artistic designs in mil j linery. They also visited Philadel phia and Baltimore. - Mrs. Geo. Hughes and little son, Pendleton, left this morning for Dan vllle, Va., her home. Mr. Hughes, her husband, who Is with T. E. Roberts & Co., will follow as soon as the season - closes, about the first of April. Mr. v and Mrs. Hughes have formed many pleasant acquaintances during their stay here, who regret their departure. Mr. Ed Hughes was taken to his home in LaGrange this morning. His condition is very encouraging to his physician and his ultimate recovery is considered probable. There seems ' very slight, if any, improvement in his paralysis as yet, though hopes are en tertained of repairing the damage to his nervous system after he recovers sufficiently to treat him for it. ,; ' At a meeting of the local lodge, B. A hot box In the machine room of the oil mill aused sparks to fall . on the llnty -drapery that had ollected, which ' was " quickly Ignited. . The flames ispread rapidly over the room and it looked as if the : whole ' place would go, but the fire apparatus at the plant and at Hines Bro8.,mlll was soon in operation and the blaze was quick ly extinguished. Stored in the build ing was a large lot of cotton seed, cot ton seed meal and. hulls which amoun -d away up into the thousands of dol lars, and the early extinguishing of the names before it got started , good probably saved this valuable plant, as the stun stored there is very inflam mable. , ' : '' . ! . : ;' Mr. Jas. F. Hill.i Mr. Jas. P. Hill died at his home on King street last night about 11 o'clock of dilatation otthe heart, the result of a paralltic stroke which occurred to him aoout two years ago. ; v - Mr. Hill had been in feeble health since he was stricken two years ago and his death was momentarily ex pected, though yesterday afternoon late ha expressed himself as feeling better and was on the streets and at his work during the day. v . Ha was sitting in his home last night talking with his family when a blood vessel bursted. superinduced by the expansion of his heart, and sank rap idly: and though the doctor was sent for immediately Mr. Hill expired be fore Dr. Weyher, the physician, ar rived. . Mr. Jas. F. Hill was born In this county, in the Wheat Swamp section about 45 years ago, ' and has lived here and closely identified with this city all his life. He was mavor of Kington for two years, 18934. Mr. - Hill ; was r a man of high mrisuan cnaracter a regular oommu nicant of the Missionary Baptist unurca m m city. -He leaves a wife and four small children to mourn his death. The death of Mr, Hill is a peculiarly sad one; and the entire community joins the family in mourning his death ana sympatmze witn tnera in tbeir be reavement. . ': ' The funeral took place from his late residence on east King 'street at 3 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. G. N. Cowan conducting the funeral rites. MARRIAGEST , Tsylor-Jones. Mr. K. F. Taylor, of Newbern, and Miss Ada O. Jones, of this city, were happilv married yesterday afternoon at the home of the bride's parents in north Klnston. Sutton and The circumstances according to the evidence adduced is as follows: H. Well & Co., sued for an attachment on the remainder of insurance policies Mr. Sutton held on property recently burned and which had not been set tied. " The Iwo policies were Tor M,500"'and one had been transferred to T. W, Mewborn &, Co., in settlement of an account, and the other to Sumrell A McCoy, who gare a due bill for $300 and their account for the policy for 1750 which bad not been adjusted. This due bill was transferred to Einstein Bros., in settlement of their accountl and Einstein Bros., making the differ enoe good to Mr. Sutton with another! due bill for 9325, which H. Weil & Co. are trying to trace and attach. This due bill, which was non-negoti able was given to Mr. Sutton's son in settlement of an account for labor.
