To the Editor: Permit me to en dorse the worthy sentiment expressed In the article by Mr. E. B. Lewi in yesterday's issue of The Free Press in reference to a proper observance of the 4th of July. It has always seemed just a little strange, and surely not in accord with eternal fitness of things, that, while almost every hamlet in the north be decks itself in the stars and stripes and recounts with pride the story of the struggle of '76 on each recurring 4th of July, quite a number of larger communities in this portion of our country, where the victory for inde pendence was won and its enunciation conceived, pass over the day witn a silent indifference which would seem to indicate that memory is dead, or that the years could lessen the achieve ments of the past. especially, in our state, snouia tne custom of celebrating Independence Day be perpetuated. We are too apt to forget that we are the descendants of the men, who, without any in spiration like eloquence of Patrick enrv in the Virginia legislature, gave tne nrst impulse to tne cause or iree- dom, and paved the way for Wash ington at Yorktown. . We have a right to claim a full quota of the glory; It is indeed our duty to ourselves, our fore-fathers and to posterity. Let us take heed of the suggestion of our fellow towns man. G. V. Cow per.
