The following were the prize winners at the ladies' auction sale of high trade lewelrr and silverware at c Bailey's yesterday afternoon. The first orize. a beAitiful silver water set consisting of water pitcher and1 goblet, was won by Miss uora uranmam. The second prize, a beautiful vase, was won by Mrs. W. T. Hines. The third prie, a silver syrup set was won bv Mrs. U. A. Underwood The sale was well attended. Msyor's Court. At the mayor's court yesterday afternoon Marinda Jones, colored, was fined, a penny and costs for dis orderly conduct in threatening assault ing Lillle Holing", colored, with an ax. After a struggle he was locked up and soon after handed nut a niatol to a bystander. He was tried for carrying a pistol and bound over to court. For being drunk he was let off with 5 cents and costs and for resisting the officer he was fined 110 and costs. . - School Trustees Buy Desks. The board of trustees of the Kinston graded schoolsmet yesterday at Canady's halL AH members present but B. W. Canady and S. H. Abbott, who were out of the city. Prof. Brogden reported that Miss Egerton, of Loulsburg, had accepted the position of teacher In the school. He further reported that the trustees could rent five rooms in the old col lege building at $4.50 each per month. He was authorized by the board to rent them till January 1, 1904. The following bills were allowed, to be charged to Peck, Hammond Co. : L, Harvey & Son, 9SQ.M for storage of heating plant. Freight, W.33. Dixon & Hooker, $3.85 for hardware. Prof. Brogden presented a bill for $6.08, for freight on school desks re turned to Goldsboro graded schools. The board then considered offers and propositions on school desks. The Grand Rapids School Furniture works having the lowest bid received the contract for furnishing 409 single oak desks to be delivered and set up - bv September 21st. The contract was sfgnea yesterday afternoon. Wa Can Make It. Tbb Frkk Press was the recipient today of a well made plug of tobacco, the product of a Lenoir county boy's Ingenuity.: The following letter explains itself: Mr. Editor: Kinston is the king of all towns, while she ia the first to pro tect the interest of the farmer, let her still hold the banner, let her business men get together aha organize a stock company to manufacture snuff and ' plug tobacco. , We have the raw material, the labor, the consumers. The machinery and experience is all we like, let ns have that and get down tn business at once. Inclosed you find a plug of tobacco made by a Lenoir county boy who has not entered his teens and has never been 30 miles from. home. You see from what others have done, we can do also. , ' . . - '- At above stated let the business men get together, organize, get machinery put it In some of those warehouses and send out agents to canvass the county and adjoining counties and let the farmers take stock by putting in their leaf tobacco (as tbey have no money). Miss Mary Kilpatrick went to Green ville this mordlng. Dr. H. D. Harper, Jr., returned last night from Conetoe. Mrs. W. F. Lonir. of Roxboro, is visiting in the city for a few days. Judffe W. S. O'B. Robinson, of Goldsboro, was in Kinston last night. Mr. J. J. Hickey, with the Imperial Tobacco company is in the city to- day. Prof. L. C. Hrodgen left last night for ChaDel Hill to spend a couple of weeks. Prof. J. C. Horner, of H. M. S., Ox ford, was in the city a short while yes terday evening. Mrs. W. L. Evans left this morning for Hitfh Point, from thence she will go to Inman, H. '. Sheriff D. F. V. Cox, Esq., went to Greenville Monday. Ernest Smith, of Tampa, Fla., is in town visiting relatives. Mrs. Georgia Baker and daughters spent Sunday in the country. Misses Lena and Bessie Davis left Tuesday to spend a while in Dunn. Mrs. C. M. Holton left Tuesday morning for a visit to Washington. Mrs. E L. Brown, of Ahoskie, is here visiting her mother, Mrs. C. C. Bland. Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Cox returned from a visit to Goldsboro Thursday morning. Prof. W. H. Ragsdale spent Wed nesdav night here in the interest of the graded school. Quite a number of our young people attended the "yearlf meeting' at Hancock's Sunday. "Pitch" seems to be a favorite game with quite a number of Ayden's young men and old ones too. Mr. D. 'Gibb, of Parmele, came down Wednesday evening and re turned Thursday morning. Mr. E. G. Cox is having a hand some residence erected on his lot adjoining the printing office. Mr. L. D. Worthington, is quite ill with typhoid fever. His many friends wish him a speedy recovery. Major J. B. Neal, was in our town Tuesday. We are always glad to see the major if he does talk life insurance. Miss Pauline Pace has returned home. Miss Bedie Darden left today for Baltimore. The brick work of Mr. R. M. Har per's hotel is completed. Miss Julia Taylor, of Hookerton, is visiting Miss Rosa Creech. Mrs. A. S. Wooten and children are visiting at Mr. H. E. Dillon's. Miss LUlie Kirkpatrlck and niece, Lillie Dale Joyner, have returned from McColl. S. C. A force of hands, under the super vision of Chief Wells, is improving the condition of our streets. Miss Daisy Wooten is home from a protracted visit among her friends at Wilson and Wilson's Mills. Mrs. C. E. Kennedy has the sym pathy of our community in the loss of her father, Mr. Wm. Sutton, of near Kinston. Mrs. Alf Forbes, of Greenville, Is visiting her daughter, Mrs. George Hadley, and also her newly arrived grandson. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Wooten, who have been visiting at Mr. Shade Wooten's, have returned to their home in Mt. Olive. FALLING CREEK ITEMS. August 18. 1903. Mr. Dempsey Wood spent Monday In Newbern on business. Kennedy returned Wed nesday from Morehead City, where she has been spending the summer. Farmers' Meeting at Rocky Mount. A telephone message from Rocky Mount at 3 p. m. today says there is a large and enthusiastic crowd there from all part of the State. -- The meeting was held in one of the Uobaoco warehouses and vigorous speeches were aeing maoe oy several prominent people.
