Joe Taylor, Jim Lowry and Zeke Plttman were tried yesterday evening before Mayor House for assaulting Lewis Washington with a brick last week, in which assault Washington received a half brick on the side of his head and the blow laid him up for several days. The evidence did not establish "who Bung dat brick", but it did show a fracas and Taylor and Plttman were found guilty of simple assault and fined 12.50 each and the costs la the case. Lowry was found not guilty. Several lawyers were em ployed in the case and the trial con umed some time. Mrs. S. R. Phillips Dead. A peculiarly sad bereavement oc curred yesterday morning when death took from a loving husband and five young children Mrs. S. It. Phillips, wife of Contractor Phillips of this city. Mrs. Phillips died while on a visit to her old home iu Auburn, near Ral eigh, after aa Illness of only a week. She had been there but a few days when she was taken 111 and lived only a week. Mr. and Mrs fhillipa moved to this place about two years ago since which time they hare made many friends who will learn with regret of Mrs. Phillips' sudden death. Five young children survive the mother to mourn their loss, the young est, Master S. R., Jr., being only six years old. Mr. Phillips, who was at his wife's side when death came, returned here yesterday and carried his children to Auburn last night to attend the funeral at that plao today. A HAPPY OCCASION. The Reunion Church Last Large Crowd. at the Methodist Night Enjoyed by Quite a large number of Methodists responded to the request of Pastor Davis to meet at the church last night and the occasion will long be remem bered bj those attending. A short service of prayer and sing- tup; was held and the pastor after ex plaining the object of the meeting turned it Into a free and easy social, and for an hour or more those present enjoyed the commingling of congenial souls to the fullest extent . After the hand shaking and social converse in the church the entire con gregation was Invited to the church lawn, which was beautifully lighted with Japanese lanterns and where the member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church had set two dozen tables on which was served delicious ice' cream and cake. ; In '' the basement of the eh arch preparations were made to serve the older ones who did not care to risk the night air. . -v . - Everybody enjoyed the occasslon very much indeed and the pastor is assured that his object, has been at tained, that of bringing closer together the members of his flock. . , Baaritka ) 1 Y3S tin l?t PERSONAL MENTION.
