Woodley's drujj: store It is said of this company that they carry the linen t scenery and richest costumes of any minstrel show travel Ing. Friday night Oct. .'10th. A gentleman on the westbound A. N. C. passenger train this morning had a very large rattlesnake that he killed Mew Newborn. The snake measured six feet and four inches in length, and when killed contained birds and a rabbit, undigested, as if iust eaten. It had only nine rattles and a buttoa. A valuable bird dog belonging to Dr. Wan. Edwards showed aigns of hydrophobia a few day a ago and was confined. Since that time the dog has developed. a. genuine case and will have to, be killed. It Is not thought that any other dogs were bitten as the doctor, wha Is familiar with the symp toms of rabies, placed the dog in con finement at the first signs. Mr. W. S. Fields' horse became frightened at drum beating on the cor ner of Gordon and Heritage streets yesterday afternoon and ran away, throwing Mr. Fields from the buggy. Though M head struck a hard sub stance, and ft painful wound was in flicted, .Mr Fields held on to the reins and never let the horse get away. He was takea home and a doctor sum moned,Vaa aside,, from the soreness caused by the fall Is all right today Mr. It. B. Blansett, from whom the . . . . . cnecic was siojea. yesteraay, nas recov ered it Mr. Blansett'a wife found the check under the seat of the buggy yes terday etng when be grot home. The presumption is that the thief became frightened at the publicity given the matter, and being afraid to present the check for payment put it In the buggy so that Mr, Blansett could get it. Mr-.Bl aasett says - be. ..did, toot go near his bwrgy from the time! he ob tained the cbeok untir he; discovered hil OUK'$Hf$t ' . One of the county oWclals had no end of amusement yesterday with, an Engl ish sparrow that he bad captured. He put thalUUe bfcd In' hla coat pocket and walkioffue to persons In the court house, he would ask the one approached If he did not, want, some chlnquepins, and turpi hie pocket toward him. . The man of course, would reach his hand into theeooket and touoh the bird, which would mve, .-. This Invariably caused a senssftiop, the man hurriedly jerking hit hand eut of the pocket, and that peculiar feeling known at "cold shiv ers" would, cbe-aoh other iup -and down his, back. The officer would qui etly tell fcim that a little chicken snake wouldn',t hurt him, but this didn't mend matters jat all, rather had a, tendenev to aggravate the 'creepy,wlt4g.:! There is one man in the city wbd cer tainly dees not believe that marriage is a failure. That man is Oliver Har rison, celered, who :jfll tonight be married for . the fifth'- time. The bride-to-be la a widow of 35 summers. The reporter was in the register of deeds' office this morning when Oliver came in, and though it was the fifth time that he (Oliver) was embarking for a matrimonial voyage, his manner at onoa proclaimed the object of his visit to the court house, and the regis ter of deeds merely asked the names of both parties. He showed the enthu siasm of si beginner and was evidently under the influence of the tender pas sion. 1 . .a--. -:.
